The morning after our hike to the highest mountain of Portugal , we get up with tired legs. Before we tell you about our island road trip this day, we would like to introduce you to our great apartment complex Baia da Barca.
The apartments are very well equipped and spacious. The complex has everything a vacationer's heart desires: access to the sea, pool, whirlpool, breakfast buffet and restaurant.
Our conclusion #1 is quite easy: highly recommended ;)
But enough said about Baia da Barca !
We start with a whale watching tour in the morning at the port of Madalena. After our adventure trip to Corvo, wo don’t need to worry about seasickness: The sea is calm today and so we drive away from Madalena a few kilometers to look for sperm whales.
Pico is one of the best spots in the world to see whales and dolphins. Over 25 species (blue whales, humpback whales, sperm whales, bottle-nosed dolphins, ...) of the great mammals can be seen here.
Unfortunately we are unlucky: During our travel time in October, only the sperm whales are near the coast. We do not see any dolphin, either. However, we see four sperm whales! The up and down diving of the huge animals is very impressive!
Unfortunately we do not catch the animals in front of the camera, which makes us very disappointed! If you want to see some, you have to fly yourself to this beautiful island and try your luck ;-)
Our conclusion #2 is: Doing a whale watching tour at the Azores is an absolute must-do, especially in summer! In autumn, you run the risk of seeing only sperm whales.
In the afternoon, our island tour takes us around the island via the ER1. Near Cachorro , which is near the small airport, a small path leads along the coast.
Not far from the road we have a great view of Pico.
We finish off the evening in a restaurant right next to the sea with freshly caught fish.
Conclusion #3: Especially when the weather is bad, we recommend a small island road trip. In case of good weather you should definitely go hiking!
Conclusion #4: Pico is a beautiful island with many outdoor activities. Unfortunately, we were a bit unlucky with the weather. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend that you visit this wonderful island on your Azores vacation.

Entspannter Inselroadtrip
Am Morgen nach unserer Wanderung auf den höchsten Berg Portugals stehen wir mit müden Beinen auf. Bevor wir euch von unserem Inselroadtrip an diesem Tag erzählen, möchten wir euch erst einmal noch unsere tolle Apartmentanlage Baia da Barca vorstellen.
Die Wohnungen sind sehr gut ausgestattet und geräumig. Die Anlage hat alles, was das Urlauber-Herz begehrt: Zugang zum Meer, Pool, Whirlpool, Frühstücksbuffet und Restaurant.
Unser Fazit#1 ist somit einfach: Klare Weiterempfehlung ;)
Doch jetzt genug von Baia da Barca geschwärmt!
Heute berichten wir euch von unserem kleinen Inselraodtrip auf Pico.
Wir starten mit einer Whale Watching-Tour am Morgen am Hafen von Madalena. Nach unserer Abenteuerfahrt auf Corvo brauchen wir uns keine Sorgen über Seekrankheit zu machen: Das Meer ist ruhig und so fahren wir einige Kilometer von Madalenaweg, um Ausschau nach Pottwalen zu halten.
Pico gehört zu den besten Spots weltweit, um Wale und Delfine zu beobachten. Über 25 Arten (Blauwale, Buckelwale, Pottwale, großer Tümmler,…) der großen Säuger können hier gesichtet werden.
Leider haben wir Pech: Zu unserer Reisezeit im Oktober sind nur noch die Pottwale vor der Küste. So sehen wir leider keinen einzigen Delfin. Allerdings erhaschen wir vier Pottwale! Das Auf- und wieder Abtauchen der riesigen Tiere ist sehr beeindruckend!
Leider erwischen wir die Tiere nicht vor der Kamera, worüber wir sehr enttäuscht sind! Falls ihr welche sehen wollt, müsst ihr also selbst auf diese schöne Insel fliegen und eine Tour machen ;-)
Unser Fazit #2 lautet daher: Eine Whale Watching-Tour auf den Azoren zu machen, ist vor allem im Sommer ein absolutes Muss! Im Herbst läuft man Gefahr, nur Pottwale zu sehen.
Nachmittags führt unsre Inseltour einmal über die ER1 um die Insel herum. Bei Cachorro , in der Nähe des kleinen Flughafens, führt ein kleiner Weg direkt an der Küste entlang.
Unweit von der Straße haben wir dann einen tollen Blick auf Pico.
Den Abend lassen wir in einem Restaurant direkt am Meer bei fangfrischem Fisch ausklingen.
Fazit#3: Gerade bei unbeständigem Wetter empfiehlt sich ein kleiner Inselroadtrip. Bei gutem Wetter solltet ihr auf jeden Fall wandern gehen!
Fazit#4: Pico ist eine wunderschöne Insel mit vielen Outddoraktivitäten. Wir hatten leider etwas Pech mit dem Wetter. Trotzdem empfehlen wir euch unbedingt, diese wunderbare Insel auf eurem Azoren-urlaub zu besuchen.

Petit road trip sur l’île
Le matin après notre randonnée sur la plus haute montagne du Portugal , nous nous levons avec des jambes fatiguées. Avant de vous parler de notre road trip sur l'île ce jour-là, nous aimerions vous présenter notre logement Baia da Barca.
Les appartements sont très bien équipés et spacieux. Le site a tout ce que le vacancier désire: accès à la mer, piscine, jacuzzi, petit-déjeuner buffet et restaurant.
Notre conclusion#1 est assez simple: appartement fortement recommandé ;)
Mais assez dit à propos de Baia da Barca !
Nous commençons par une observation des baleines à partir du port de Madalena. Après notre voyage d'aventure à Corvo, nous n'avons pas besoin de nous inquiéter du mal de mer: la mer est calme aujourd'hui et nous nous éloignons seulment quelques kilomètres de Madalena pour voir des cachalots.
Pico est l'un des meilleurs endroits au monde pour voir des baleines et des dauphins. On peut y voir plus de 25 espèces (baleine bleus, baleines à bosse, cachalots, grand dauphin, etc.) des grands mammifères.
Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas de chance: pendant notre voyage en octobre, seuls les cachalots sont encore près de la côte. Nous ne voyons aucun dauphin. Cependant, nous voyons quatre cachalots! La plongée des énormes animaux est très impressionnante!
Malheureusement, nous n’arrivons pas à prendre une photo, ce qui nous énerve vraiment! Donc, si vous voulez en voir, vous devez vous rendre sur cette belle île et tenter votre chance ;-)
Notre conclusion#2 est la suivante: faire une observation des baleines aux Açores est une activité incontournable, surtout en été! En automne, vous risquez de ne voir que des cachalots.

Dans l'après-midi, notre road trip nous fait traverser l'île via l'ER1. Près de Cachorro, pas loin du petit aéroport, un petit sentier longe la côte.
Non loin de la route, nous avons une vue magnifique sur Pico.

Nous terminons la soirée dans un restaurant au bord de la mer avec du poisson fraîchement pêché.
Conclusion#3: Surtout si le temps est mauvais, nous recommandons un petit road trip sur l’ île. En cas de beau temps, vous devriez absolument faire de la randonnée!
Conclusion#4: Pico est une île magnifique avec de nombreuses activités possibles. Malheureusement, nous avons été un peu malchanceux en ce qui concerne le temps. Néanmoins, nous vous recommandons fortement de visiter cette île magnifique lors de vos vacances aux Açores !
