Today we would like to really take a break from everyday life! Just relaxing, we are finally on holiday and were already busy hiking yesterday!
And how do you start perfectly in such a day?
Yes, exactly, with Pancakes! What could be better than fresh, home-made pancakes with locally grown pineapple ?

Yummy pancakes!

After this extensive and delicious breakfast, we drive to Furnas to admire the hot springs.
In fact, we admire these Caldeiras only for a very short time, because it stinks dreadfully of sulfur everywhere. We wonder how the inhabitants of the city can actually live with this stench here. Apart from that, the bubbling and simmering and the rising steam are really impressive!

Our next stop is the nearby park Terra Nostra Garden, our actual destination for today. The area was built in 1775 and includes beautiful gardens, ponds and several hot springs where you can swim.
As always at the Azores, the park is so beautiful, it has tropical plants and is very well maintained.

SM5_6.jpg

After about 1 hour walk through the park, we finally want to go to the actual attraction: the dirty pond!

SM5_7.jpg
Dirty pond, here we come!

We change quickly and then jump into the 35 degrees warm water.

SM5_8.jpg

SM5_9.jpg
Wonderful warmth

The water gets its color due to the increased iron occurrence. An old lady tells us that this mineral-containing water is the best remedy for her joint pain, which is why she has been coming here regularly for over 10 years.

We enjoy that pleasant warmth as the weather around us gets worse. Here we can spend some hours and relax in the healthy water.

And if you wonder whether it does stink of sulfur here or not - not at all! So here is our conclusion: The park has everything the holidaymaker needs for a spa day, and, as we often write during these Azores-posts: It is a must-do four you!

The essential:

  • Furnas - hot springs with sulfur stench!
  • Terra Nostra Garden: Beautiful park with hot springs, ideal for relaxing
  • Entrance fee: about 7€
  • Plan at least half a day
  • Pack old bathing suits! With the iron content, the bikini/swimming trunks may get some change of color

Baden in einem Drecktümpel? – Mit Vergüngen!

SM5_7.jpg

Mare crasseuse, on arrive!
