Visit the Azores #18: Cold water or relaxing in a hot spring? (EN/GER/FR)

Final destination of the day

After the visit of the wonderful chapel and the walk through the valley of the seagulls to the Lagoa do Fogo,it is only afternoon, so that we have still time to continue our island discovery tour.

Now we have to decide: take a detour to another hot spring in the middle of nature or take a short walk to Salto do Cabrito, a remote waterfall?
Quite undecided, we firstly drive to the entrance of Caldeira Velha, in which the hot spring is located. There are cars everywhere on the roadside, it seems busy and crowded, and so we decide to move on quickly.

After another ten minutes’ drive, we stop at a small parking space and start walking. Along the way, we meet two locals who are refreshing the trail marking. One has a white paint bucket with a brush in his hand, the other a red one. And so they move from sign to sign and renew them: White line – red line – white line – red line. In Germany, no one would ever think to make such a thing in teamwork – we grin happily and keep walking.

After about 3 kilometres, we arrive at the hidden Salto do Cabrito.

The water rushes majestically from the rocks into a small lake. Everything is wonderfully quiet and we can enjoy nature all to ourselves.

Everything seems so idyllic that we decide to put on the bathing suits and to swim in the maybe warm water (after all, the hot springs are only a few kilometres away).

Warm!? Haha, good joke! The water is ice cold! But now we already have the swimwear on – no way out! So instead of relaxing in the hot spring of the Caldeira Velha, we have to take the plunge into the cold water!

As soon as the first shock is over, the little cool down is fantastic!

And let's be honest: who can say that they have bathed in a remote waterfall on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! ;-)

After this wonderful highlight, we walk back to the car and drive back to Nordeste to our small cottage. On the way there, we stop at the lighthouse of Nordeste.
If you really drive past the north-eastern end of the island, then visit this great spot!

There you have not only a great view of the waves crashing on the rocks, but also of a small fishing village.

Well, now it's really enough for today! Let's go back to the warm and cosy Casa da Madrinha!

Letztes Ziel des Tages

Nach dem Besuch der wundervollen Kapelle und der Wanderung durchs Tal der Möwen zum Lagoa do Fogo ist es erst Nachmittag, sodass unsre Inselentdeckung für heute noch nicht ganz zu Ende ist.

Jetzt müssen wir uns entscheiden: Einen Abstecher zu einer weiteren heiße Quelle mitten in der Natur wagen oder einen kleinen Spaziergang zum Salto do Cabrito, einem abgelegenen Wasserfall, machen?
Unschlüssig fahren wir zuerst zum Eingang Caldeira Velha, in welchem sich die heiße Quelle befindet. Überall am Straßenrand stehen jedoch Autos, es wirkt sehr geschäftig und voll, sodass wir schnell entscheiden, weiterzufahren.

Nach weiteren zehn Minuten Fahrt halten wir an einem unscheinbaren Parkplatz an und wandern los. Unterwegs treffen wir auf zwei Einheimische, die gerade die Wegmarkierungen auffrischen. Der eine hat einen weißen Farbeimer mit Pinsel in der Hand, der andere einen roten. Und so ziehen sie von Markierung zu Markierung und erneuern diese: weißer Strich – roter Strich – weißer Strich – roter Strich. In Deutschland würde bestimmt keiner auf die Idee kommen, das zu zweit zu machen – wir schmunzeln vergnügt und laufen weiter.

Nach ca. 3 Kilometern kommen wir am versteckten Salto do Cabrito an.

Das Wasser stürzt majestätisch von den Felsen in einen kleinen See. Alles ist wunderbar ruhig und wir können die Natur ganz alleine in vollen Zügen genießen.

Alles wirkt so idyllisch, dass wir uns kurzerhand entschließen, die Badeklamotten überzuziehen und eine Runde im vielleicht lauwarmen Wasser (schließlich sind einige Kilometer entfern die heißen Quellen) zu schwimmen.

Warm!? Haha, von wegen! Eiskalt ist das Wasser! Aber jetzt sind wir schon umgezogen, da müssen wir es auch durchziehen! So müssen wir also, anstelle entspannt in der heißen Quelle des Caldeira Velha zu relaxen, den Sprung ins kalte Wasser wagen!

Sobald der erste Schock vorüber ist, ist die kleine Abkühlung aber wunderbar!

Und mal ehrlich: Wer kann schon behaupten, an einem abgelegenen Wasserfall auf einer Insel mitten im Atlantik gebadet zu haben! ;-)

Nach diesem weiteren Highlight wandern wir zum Auto zurück und fahren zurück nach Nordeste zu unsrem kleinen Haus. Auf dem Weg dorthin halten wir noch am Leuchtturm von Nordeste.
Falls ihr euch tatsächlich einmal ans nord-östlichste Ende der Insel verirrt, dann besucht auch diesen tollen Spot!

Dort habt ihr nicht nur einen tollen Ausblick auf die Wellen, die an die Felsen krachen, sondern auch auf ein kleines Fischerdorf.

Und der Leuchtturm ist ebenfalls nicht zu verachten.

So, jetzt reicht es aber wirklich für heute! Auf geht’s zurück in die warme Stube der Casa da Madrinha!

Après la visite de la merveilleuse chapelle et la promenade dans la vallée des mouettes jusqu'au Lagoa do Fogo, il n’est pas encore trop tard, de sorte que nous avons encore le temps de continuer notre tour de découverte de l’île.

Maintenant, nous devons nous décider: faire un détour vers une autre source d'eau chaude au milieu de la nature ou faire une petite promenade à pied vers Salto do Cabrito, une cascade isolée?
Tout à fait indécis, nous conduisons d’abord à l’entrée de Caldeira Velha, c’est ici que se trouve la source thermale. Il y a des voitures partout au le bord de la route, ça semble assez rempli et bruyant, alors nous décidons de continuer notre chemin.

Après dix minutes de route, nous nous arrêtons sur un petit parking et commençons à marcher. En route, nous rencontrons deux açoréens qui refont le marquage du chemin. L'un des deux a un seau de peinture blanche avec un pinceau à la main, l'autre un rouge. Et ainsi, ils se déplacent de signe en signe et les renouvellent: Ligne blanche – ligne rouge – ligne blanche – ligne rouge. En Allemagne, personne ne penserait jamais à faire une telle chose à deux – nous sourions joyeusement et continuons à marcher.

Après environ 3 kilomètres, nous arrivons au Salto do Cabrito caché.

L'eau se jette majestueusement des rochers dans un petit lac. Tout est merveilleusement calme et nous pouvons profiter de la nature pour nous tous seuls.

Tout semble si idyllique que nous décidons de mettre le maillot de bain et de nager dans l’eau peut-être chaude (après tout, les sources chaudes ne sont qu’à quelques kilomètres de là).

Chaud!? Haha, bonne blague! L'eau est glacée! Mais maintenant, nous avons déjà mis le maillot de bain – donc, pas de pitié! Alors, au lieu de nous détendre dans la source chaude de Caldeira Velha, nous nageons dans l’eau froide!

Dès que le premier choc est passé, la baignade est fantastique!

Plaisir froid mais merveilleux

Et soyons honnêtes: qui peut dire qu’il s’est baigné au près d’une cascade isolée sur une île au milieu de l’océan Atlantique! ;-)

Après ce merveilleux moment, nous retournons à la voiture et rentrons à Nordeste où se trouve notre petit chalet. Sur le chemin, nous nous arrêtons au phare de Nordeste.
Si vous passez vraiment au nord-est de l'île, visitez ce superbe endroit!

Là, vous avez non seulement une vue magnifique sur les vagues qui se brisent sur les rochers, mais aussi sur un petit village de pêcheurs.

Eh bien, maintenant, ça suffit pour aujourd'hui! Retournons à la Casa da Madrinha confortable!

L’essentiel:

• Caldeira Velha: source chaude dans la forêt, certes agréable mais un peu beaucoup fréquentée
• Promenade au Salto do Cabrito environ 2-3 h
• Must-Do à Nordeste: promenade jusqu’au phare
