Getting to know the West End of London

June 2020 · 2 min read · England

I had the pleasure of taking a walk through what is known as the West End of London, a wonderful and lively borough that is positively worth visiting; there, I could find the popular Piccadilly Circus, as well as other interesting sites and attractions. I want to share with you all some experiences and relevant details.

Once there, I noticed that the famous Piccadilly Circus crossing has a heavy traffic due to its location, in the center of the theater district. It is considered one of the main and more dynamic tourist attractions of the West End district. It was built in 1819 to link Regent Street with the main commercial and entertainment area, connecting Piccadilly with Shaftesbury, Haymarket, Glasshouse Street and Coventry.

This street intersection is well-known for displaying huge illuminated advertisements placed in the north corner building; these advertisements have been shown there since 1910, and were initially lit with gas lamps, isn’t it amazing?

In the West End, I could also find renowned buildings, such as the Criterion Theater and the London Pavilion, the Eros statue and the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, created in 1893 in honor of Count Anthony Ashley-Cooper. In this elitist area we can also find numerous high-class nightclubs, hotels, embassies, schools, art galleries and museums.

During my visit, I was able to appreciate some talented street performers presenting their shows in the surroundings; I remember there was a unique atmosphere and people were really entertained. I really enjoyed this great and animated borough that has so much to offer tourists and citizens. I hope to visit it again.
