LA FONTANA DI TREVI, ROME

LA FONTANA DI TREVI, ROME

January 2020 · 2 min read

A memory that I treasure a lot is my visit to the wonderful and very popular Trevi Fountain at the 3-way crossing.

The Trevi Fountain, built in baroque style, is one of the largest monumental fountains in Rome, located right in Aqua Virgo, an ancient aqueduct that served the city and flowed directly to the Agripa hot springs.

This splendid work was designed by architect Leon Battista Alberti, after Pope Nicholas V ordered the repair of the aqueduct to be completed.

In its central part there is a sculpture known as the Ocean by Pietro Bracci, on the sides we can see the statues of Abundance and Health by Filippo della Valle. The sculpture has 2 hippocampus, a calm one, representing a quiet sea which is led effortlessly by a Triton, and an agitated one, representing a convulsed sea.

There are also sculptures of Agrippa and the goddess Trivia, created by Giovanni Pannini. The fountain has been restored and modernized several times to alleviate the passage of time.

As it is known, there is a tradition of throwing coins to the fountain wishing for returning to Rome. It is an interesting fact to know that the money raised in this way (about 3000 euros per day) is aimed at acquiring food for the most needy in Rome, although sometimes, unscrupulous people try to steal the coins from the fountain.

I look forward to having the joy of returning to this beautiful place as I wished for when I threw my coins to the fountain, since there, I could experience a great and unequaled time.
