ROME COLISEUM

ROME COLISEUM

January 2020 · 2 min read

This time, I am pleased to share with you all some curiosities and facts of cultural and historical interest on the most emblematic places I visited during my trip to Rome.

ROME COLISEUM

One of the most impressive places I knew during my visit to the Italian capital was by far the Colosseum. The fact of seeing it so imposing in the middle of the city was a spectacular and rewarding sensation; however, the satisfaction was even greater when I was able to enter and explore it thoroughly. This monumental structure is undoubtedly the most iconic tourist attraction in Rome; it was declared a World Heritage Site, and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

This famous site dating from the time of the Roman Empire was built in the first century. Its name refers to the statue of the Colossus of Nero, although it is also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, since it was built during the Flavia dynasty.

With a capacity for almost 65,000 viewers, the Colosseum was the scene of gladiatorial fighting, as well as theatrical plays, animal hunting and public executions. In medieval times the building had other uses; it served as a fortress, a quarry, a shelter and a religious headquarters. Nowadays, the Pope performs a Via Crucis there every Holy Friday.

Around the Colosseum, towards the Palatine Hill, I could appreciate the arch of Constantine, which commemorates the victory of Constantine I the Great in the battle of the Milvian Bridge. Right in front, there is the Roman Forum, the former headquarters of the empire, where commerce, religion and justice were administered. Its ruins include buildings and monuments, such as: the Temples of Romulus, Saturn, Venus, Rome, Vespasian and Titus, the Arches of Septimius Severus and Titus, the former seat of the Senate, the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, among others.

I consider that my visit to this historic compound was one of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever had, since, I did not only entertained myself, but I also had the opportunity to learn a lot about the history and culture of the Roman Empire, which in its time came to conquer almost the whole known world. I recommend you to take this tour without thinking twice.
