THE 8 MOST BEAUTIFUL AND EMBLEMATIC PLAZAS IN ROME

January 2020 · 3 min read

It is really difficult to make a top of the most beautiful and emblematic plazas in Rome. I will do it merely based on my personal experience during my visit to the unforgettable eternal city.

1. Saint Peter’s Square

)
I remember that during my trip to Rome, I had high expectations for my visit to Vatican City, and I was not disappointed. The first thing I found when I arrived in the city was the majestic Plaza San Pedro. This consists of a trapezoidal esplanade designed by the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini; It has colonnades, fountains, sculptures of 140 saints and a monumental obelisk.

There, parishioners from different parts of the world congregate every Sunday at 12m to pray the Angelus prayer and receive the papal blessing.

2. Trevi Fountain Square

Designed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti with Baroque style, this square surrounds the famous Trevi Fountain, where tourists usually throw coins and make wishes, I was no exception. This space is undoubtedly emblematic and very beautiful.

3. Piazza Spagna

On my visit I could see that Plaza España is one of the most popular squares in Rome. It is located at the foot of the stairway of the Trinità dei Monti. There is the Barcaccia Fountain designed by the architects Pietro and Gian Bernini, to commemorate the flooding of the Tiber River in 1598.

4. Piazza Navona

Baroque and best known for hosting the famous Bernini Fountain of the Four Rivers, Piazza Navona is a very popular destination. There, street painters and artists provide a dynamic and entertaining environment. It is a must see since it can be accessed from various points of the city.

This beautiful urban space designed by Giuseppe Valadier is located in front of the Isola Tiberina, near the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which houses the unique and representative sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (the Mouth of Truth).
