How To Get To Ancient Korykos

Korykos ancient city is located on the southern highway along the Mediterranean coast.

It is 25 km from Silifke and 65 km from Mersin.

As it reaches the coast, there are 2 small bays there.

As you walk towards the northern side, you will find the entrance to explore the ancient city of Korykos.

The Korykos fortress

Far away, you see a high fortress sitting on the mountain slope. You can't miss it.

The fortress city wall is surrounded by a natural harbour.

Ancient city of Korykos

Korykos was an important center for trade during the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods.

It was one of the most important trade cities in Cilicia for 500 years. It became an important center for olive oil. This means that there were a lot of grapes and olives harvest area.

The ruins of the city is quite extensive.

Korykos regained its power became an important center for Christianity in the 5th Century.

Big churches were constructed during this time.

There is a big necropolis showing Christian tombs and sacrophagi.

During the reign of Byzantian Kings in the early 12th century, the fortress of Korykos was constructed.

In the 13th century AD when Korykos was part of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.

This ancient city has two series of walls one inside another. The stones here were built on the buildings from the Roman period.

On the east side, there is a moat constructed in the rock.
