Al-Azhar Mosque: Cairo, Egypt (2008)

October 2022 · 2 min read · Cairo

In my four years of time in Cairo, I have visited Al Azhar mosque several times for prayers but only once with my family to have a complete tour. Although, mosques are not the places to visit as an attraction for us so, we planned to offer prayers there and at the same time, have a good walk through the ancient walls of the mosque.

Egypt is full of history and Al Azhar is one of the oldest mosque and university in the world. It has a vast history, making and handling of the structures, also known as "the City of a Thousand Minarets".

This was the first time I was in Al Azhar mosque with my parents and a camera. I was in a mood to capture some nice pictures of inside the mosque as a memory and now, I realized it was a good decision to remember my tour inside of Al Azhar mosque.

We were accompanied by a tour guide who took us inside the mosque to different parts and told us different stories and history regarding those parts of the mosque.

He took us to the library where we had a little walk. Honestly, I was not interested in listening to that guy because I was not finding it true or maybe he was unable to say it correctly in English so, whatever the reason was, I was just busy in keeping an eye on my parents and roaming around the place.

There was something old fashioned and old style thing fitted on the wall which I tried to check on google about it but didn’t find anything. I think it could be something which was helpful in checking the position of the Sun at that time or maybe related to something that.

Then, there was a place where our guide offered Adhan and said, through this place, the sound spreads long way and was used at early times of the mosque.

My parents offered prayers at the specific area given by our guide and also shared some other religious info with my father.
No doubt, the mosque itself is very calm and relaxing and I do feel satisfied and internal happiness while praying inside the mosque, there is something special about this place, had some spiritual feeling while walking in there.
