Istanbul baklava or Turkish viagra

June 2018 · 7 min read · Istanbul

 Hi friends!

All the roads of Istanbul lead to Karakoy, in order to taste the delicious baklava in the best company of Turkey Karakoy Gulluoglu/Karaköy Güllüoğlu. Baklava of this brand is preferred not only by Turks, but also by residents of other countries.

During my stay in Turkey, I had to taste Oriental sweets of different types and from different factories. But who first tasted baklava Karakoy Gulluoglu-remember the magical taste forever. Turkish players in the tradition before the match, be sure to use baklava. And jokingly it is called "Turkish viagra".

The company Karakoy Gulluoglu was established in 1820. The secrets of cooking baklava carefully hidden. Hacı Mehmed Güllü / Hachi Mehmed güllü founded a family company that is thriving in our days. Hachi Mehmed's great-grandson opened the first confectionery shop in Karakoy in 1949. Business is gradually gaining a solid niche in this direction.

In the photo you can see the güll family. It so happened that the two sons of the older güll did not agree. So in Istanbul there is another Gullu branch, which goes on its own path of development. Therefore, in addition to Karakoy, this brand can be found in other areas of Istanbul. But the quality is quite different from the products of the main cafe, which is located in Karakoy.

Turkey is a stunning country of sweets for every taste and color. Sweet eat tons, not complexing from excess weight. Baklava is eaten in the morning, at lunch and in the evening. Not just baklava. I'm dizzy from the abundance of sweets. It's good that I'm calm to them. But, if the house was constantly baklava and lukum, probably, I could not deny myself this pleasure.

Especially interesting is the Turkish holiday Şeker Bayram / Sheker Bayram-a holiday of sweets. That's where the Paradise for the sweet tooth! After this holiday, the sweet tooth is very difficult to move, they slowly roll through the streets and moan with complete pleasure. In Turkey, the special chefs prepare sweet Kandelaki. Most often in this role are men. The company Karakoy Gulluoglu always takes part in this event.

Cafe shop Karakoy Gulluoglu is very easy to find. Galata bridge can serve as a reference point. If you are from eminen walk on the bridge, it will lead you to the Karakoy area. Then you need to keep the right side. You will quickly find a cafe along the wonderful old alleys. If you use the sea bus to Karakoy, then at the exit of the port, almost immediately, you can get to the magical cafe Karakoy Gulluoglu.

Get ready for the fact that there is always a huge number of visitors. On the day of the institution visit an average of 5,000 people. Free place even early in the morning you will not always find. As a rule, there is a conveyor. Some visitors replace others, no one sits for a long time. But the cozy atmosphere smoothes a large flow of visitors. The last time we were at 23 hours, hoping for free seats. It didn't work out, it was busy!

The system in the cafe is next. First you make an order. The seller issues a check and you pay at the cash Desk. Everything happens very quickly, do not be afraid of the long queue. The administrator of the institution as ducks all sits and eliminates quarrels. Turkish people sometimes for baklava can and in eye give. I'm joking. With the paid check you return to the seller, and he gives Goodies.

You can pass out from the abundance. I advise you to take one 4-5 pieces of different baklava. If it is not enough, it is better to buy. I can only eat three pieces. When ordering the seller immediately tell me that you will drink. Take away on a tray of your order, then head deep into the institution for drinks. The line is there and there. A portion of 5-6 pieces plus tea will cost an average of $ 6. Agree, not so much. After a magical meal, you can walk for half a day and not be hungry. Many calories will give strength and inspiration.

Near the cafe-shop is the factory Karakoy Gulluoglu (200 meters), which is very convenient. Made and delivered immediately. The factory produces 2000 tons of baklava every day. Not to mention the other sweets. And once in 1949 were not the best times for the brand. Pakhlava was not so popular - it was not in great demand among the residents. The güll family held free tastings and festive events to attract customers. But now it's hard to believe. The company did the delivery for free. Factory Karakoy Gulluoglu recognized as the best factory for the production of baklava. In 1949, a kilogram of baklava cost five Turkish liras (I do not know how the dollar compared to the Turkish Lira in those days). Now the average cost of 80 Turkish liras or 20 dollars.

If you are invited to visit a Turkish family, be prepared for the fact that it is for a long time. At first, the hostess offers everyone a compliment. Then there will be the first, second, third, fourth... Almost no breaks. Then start the traditional tea party with the usual cookies and cakes. Over all the Turkish coffee with Turkish delight and baklava. This is another event. Then go sliced fruit. Giving up something is very bad manners. The guest in Turkey is always accepted as a king.

At the Karakoy Gulluoglu factory, not only do baklava, but also teach students this craft. Representatives of the company give lectures at universities in Turkey on the intricacies of cooking and the history of baklava. 40 TV companies of the world have already made a report about the famous factory. As they say the owners of the company family Gullu, one of the secrets is that in the manufacture of the finest dough and read a special prayer.

Previously, everyone loved to watch the production of baklava. Craftsmen made baklava right in front of the visitors. It was an interesting show. Now in the cafe Gulluoglu the whole process is broadcast on the screens, which are installed in different parts. You will learn not only the history of the company, but also be able to see the process of making baklava at the factory Karakoy Gulluoglu.

It's all in cash. In the evenings, there is only a Turkish company, you can rarely see tourists. The Turks come here with large families and enjoy every kind of baklava.

On the website of the company Gulluoglu you can always order baklava at home. The choice is huge, the main thing is not to get confused. The Turks even invented diet baklava. There is international shipping.

Order baklava for two. We can say that he is very modest.

In the cafe-shop presents a lot of gift sets. Before you Rahat-lukum, which translated as"a piece of satisfaction."

All the Windows in the cafe look so delicious that you want everything at once!

If you are going to buy a baklava home or give it to someone, I highly recommend to do it in Karakoy.

Here they are, tidbits of pleasure! While writing an article, thoughts in the cafe...

Dense rows of Turkish people absorb baklava and communicate.

I already wrote that in Karakoy Gulluoglu the best water cake in Istanbul.
