Japanese event Niiname-sai

December 2018 · 2 min read

Hello steemians!
I am RYO!

I visited the shrine on 23rd November.
There was a "Niiname-sai(新嘗祭)" of Japan this day.

Niiname-sai is the day to appreciate the grace of all cereals.
People thank God for dedicating the new rice of the year.
After thanking God we are finally allowed to eat new rice.

Niiname-sai is one of the most important events in Japan.
So various events will be held at each shrine in Japan at the same time.

At the Koma shrine I went to, the performance of Japanese old tales was held.

It was various performances in about 1 hour.
The event does not emit words, and most of it is dancing to music.

In English it can only be expressed as "dancing", but in Japanese it is called "Mai(舞)"

The word closer to dance in Japanese is "Odori(踊り)"

"Odori" is a word used for fun events, "Mai" is a gift and thanks to God and nature with a thankfulness.
It subtly differs in nuance.

I took a video of Mai.
It is no speaks word, So you can enjoy😊

I do not understand all the deep meanings, Because Japan with a long long history.
But I am glad to see these events.
Because I feel like I was able to time trip into the spirit and deep history of Japan…😊

I'm happy if you feel the same way.
