A short hike to the ruins of Schonenburg castle

January 2020 · 2 min read · Gemeinde Schönberg am Kamp

In this post I want to present you the ruins of Schonenburg castle in Schönberg am Kamp, a small market town with approximately 2.000 inhabitants in Lower Austria, located at the beautiful Kamp river.

Starting point of this hike is the "Alte Schmiede", a former smithy. The building now hosts the tourist office and a wine shop where you can buy wine from local producers. In addition, it is used for exhibitions and small events.

You walk to the market place and then up the hill in southern direction: first on a street called "Neustifter Straße", later you turn left into a street called "Am Schloßberg".

You walk through the wood for ten minutes.

Then you reach the ruins of Schonenburg castle. The castle has been built in the 11th or 12th century. It was NOT destroyed during a war. 1778 the castle was given up and the locals started to destroy the castle in order to gain building material.

Today, only a few fragments are left.

And most fragments are overgrown.

When you walk up the steep and overgrown path you will find some kind of platform, on that a small pavillon has been built.

From there, you will have a nice view on Schönberg.

So, maybe the few remains of the castle are not worth taking this hike, but the great view is a very good reason for taking this hike.

There are more hiking paths in Schönberg and I am looking forward to present more about Schönberg to you in future.

Free hiking maps are available in the Alte Schmiede during opening hours or in a box at the information board at the bus stop at "Hauptstraße".
