Chasing the Perseids Meteor Shower in the White Mountains: Part 1

August 2021 · 2 min read · New Hampshire

Hello Hiveians!

It's been a while since my last post and I wanted to make an effort to get active on here again after some busy times with life and family.

So we'll pick up with my most recent adventure, going up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to check out the peak of the Perseids Meteor shower!

The day came and the weather looked a bit iffy, but we figured we'd give it a shot and see what happens. So we drove up north 2 hours to get to our first spot. We knew thunderstorms/clouds would be rolling in the early hours of the night and hopefully clear up a bit past midnight. So we didn't know what we'd see at the first spot.

We arrived at the pond on top of a mountain to a somewhat clear sky, but with clouds rolling in. I saw a few meteors but nothing too amazing, and no photos of meteors here, BUT we were treated to another kind of celestial show!

While I was photographing the milky-way and trying to get meteors, thunder clouds were rolling in and with thunder comes lightning.

I managed to capture this small lonely cloud drifting by while it popped off some lightning! It wasn't the meteors I came for, but this was arguably better, especially since I also got the reflection in the pond! How cool!

Here's a few more of the images I was able to capture at this location.

So not what I came for, but a very pleasant surprise! Soon after these shots, the storm came in full force and we had to wait it out in the car and hope it cleared up after (spoiler:it did) and if there were any meteors to photograph, you'll see them in Part 2 soon!

Hope you enjoyed these shots as much as I did! And keep an eye out for the next part!

Til next time,

Sean
