Great American Western Road Trip: Day 2: A Zion Sunset

April 2022 · 3 min read · Utah

Hello Hiveians and welcome back!

We're picking up from the last post where we just finished the famous Angels Landing hike, and are now heading to catch an iconic Zion sunset!

After finishing that long and strenuous hike, we decided to have a meal at the picnic tables and take a short rest. We were still a bit undecided on what we wanted to do for sunset, based on options as well as distance from where we'll be camping out that night.

After going over the options, we decided to hit the Canyon Overlook. It's a great place to watch sunrise or sunset, as it's easy to hike, especially if you're going before sunrise or after sunset. The only slight issue with it depending when you're going is that parking can be limited.

As I mentioned, it's a pretty short and easy hike, starting with a few stairs and small walk till you get to a pretty cool bridge that takes you around a corner into a little sort of cave.

After passing that, and just a little hike more, and you could see all the people at the overlook, and there's always going to be a bit of crowd at sunset/sunrise.

And than, finally, we've arrived. And man, is it worth it, especially for such a short and easy hike.

You can't help but stare in awe at what an incredible view you have in front of you. Even when you have a decent sized crowd there with you, including an engagement photoshoot.

But I just went off the beaten path a bit and found my own spot to hang out and enjoy this incredible view in solitude.

After the sun had begun to really set, we decided to head out a bit early as our camping spot was a bit far, and we had a very early morning coming the next day, so we started to hike back.

We hiked back, and started to head out of the park. On the way out, I caught an amazing view of the sunset light hitting these amazing red rock cliffs!

And we made a quick stop at a market to grab a few snacks (how many shopping areas have you been to with a view like that?) for the night and for the next days adventure, which is the famous Zion Narrows!

The Narrows is a water hike up the Virgin River which runs through a slot canyon of tower walls! It's truly an incredible place and amazing hike! So check back for that soon!

I feel a lot of people "overlook" the canyon overlook, if you've been to Zion, did you go here? Let me know, and let me know what your favorite shots were!

Until next time,

- Sean
