A Chilly Evening Delight: Baked Flounder Fish At Lekhyttans Kök & Kiosk

February 2023 · 3 min read · Sweden

When the temperature drops, all you want is a cosy place to enjoy a hot drink. And what could be better than freshly baked fish with butter and potatoes? We discovered Lekhyttans Kök & Kiosk, a restaurant in the Swedish countryside. Their homemade baked flounder fish was very special!

On the way home from Oslo to Stockholm, we noticed the wiper fluid was starting to run out, so we thought we'd stop somewhere to top up and refuel. We had crossed the Karlskoga and were heading towards Örebro. We saw a gas station and took the opportunity to take a break. I was showing my son @saif-ul-wahab how to fill wiper fluid, cold wind was blowing. Standing outside seemed painful enough. That's when I saw the Lekhyttans Kök & Kiosk with a petrol pump.

We entered Lekhyttans for coffee for @nazneen-ansari and me and hot chocolate for the kids. As we entered, we were greeted by a cheerful young girl at the counter. The atmosphere inside is very nostalgic. You have no idea what the inside will look like when you're standing outside.

A very modern and attractive checkout counter. Next to the cash register was a room where you could see many handicrafts hanging, crocheted pits, hand painted paintings and some small handicrafts.

Then there is a large common room where a buffet was served. There was so much food to choose from in such a small place. As I said we went in just for coffee but the atmosphere inside was so welcoming that we also ordered a baked fish for tasting and went further inside and found a very bright room with Fondvägg floral wallpaper.

Wooden furniture, tablecloths and decorations and even an old telephone. It felt so nostalgic that we ended up in the countryside during the 80s and 90s.

Since it was getting cold, the kids got a big glass of hot chocolate with cream. Delicious fish baked in classic French spices, served with butter sauce, boiled potatoes and haricot verts.

The cafe appears to be a family business with mother Tina and her daughter and others working there. There was such a hospitable atmosphere. On one wall I saw a framed two-page newspaper clipping with an article about Tina Luhtala Johansson who runs this cafe in Lekhytten.
Tina, who we discovered was cooking in the kitchen, came out and we asked to take a picture with her.

She was a nice lady and got ready right away with her apron on for the picture. What a wonderful experience, sometimes you see something completely different than what you expect.

All in all, we had a great experience at the Lekhyttans Kök & Kiosk. The friendly atmosphere and the great selection of food and drink made it a perfect stop for us on our journey.

We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area!
