The Xitou Nature Education Area is located in central Taiwan and on average is 1150m above sea level. It's height and nestled in the mountains makes is a very popular place to go, especially in the summer weekends when it is nice and cool.

The area is very large and surrounded by mountains some of which reach over 2000m and there are plenty of different hikes to do. I didn't do a hike when I went, and just strolled around the forest which was was very pleasant.

SACRED TREE
There used to be an old tree in the forest that is about 2800 years old! It was called the sacred tree until it sadly fell over during a big storm in 2016. Now it lies at it's original spot and you can still see its roots sticking out.

I walked up close towards the trunk and from just a small section could see the many layers which represents the years of a tree. I imagine if you cut a whole cross section you will probably see the entire 2800 layers.

The sacred tree is a popular spot for visitors to sit and rest. It's located at quite a central spot in the forest and many hiking and walking routes past by it. I'm thinking now that it's fallen over is it still sacred, and whether you will be blessed if you hang around for long enough?

SKY WALK
The other highlight in the forest is a skywalk. It is 220 meters long and 22.6m above ground, and a great way to see the trees from a different angle.

From this photo above, it doesn't seem very high, but if you look at the photo below, you can see it is. Certainly not one for the faint hearted!
