Hello Steemit Friends!!
Today I wanna show you the Amazing Creatures, Kangaroo Island Kangaroos. I know some of you saw them a lot but do you really know about them? They are one of the fascinating animal in native Australia, have lots of unique features.
What They Look Like?
They are shorter and have much darker colour fur, some of them have has a chocolate coloured fur and dark brown to black tipped paws and feet. They are typically smaller and sturdier compare to mainland similar spices but they grow to about 1.6-1.8 meters. You will see them in thick scrubland and open grassland especially dusk and dawns.
Personality
They are close relative of the Western Grey Kangaroo, however hey look very different from mainland Kangaroo, which you often see at zoo. On this island they don’t have any predators so they move relatively slower and are not alert to danger compare to mainland ones. Also I feel they are really curious and comfortable with us being there.
Reproduction Cycle
Kangaroo Island Kangaroo can breed any time of the year. The joey continues to suckle until it is 18 months old and at 20 months the Kangaroos are mature and can start breeding. About 7 months they have fur and look like small kanga, about 8 months the joey can get in and out of the pouch. Once joey get this age, the mum breeds again but the older joey can get milk from mum as they need.
Here, this is the fact that the local guide told me, and really fascinating! They can suspend a pregnancy! Once mum has given birth, she can pregnant again even she still have baby in her pouch but second baby develops until it’s a bundle of around 100 cells and stop growing. Once older joey grow up enough to get out from the pouch, they start growing.
Hierarchy of the Mob
Kangaroos are very social animals. They live in groups called “mobs”. Most of mobs are mixture of males and females but the is one dominant male which leads the mob. Boxing is the common way to decide the strength of male kangaroos. This will be a way of playing, interacting with other Kangaroos but they do fight to become the dominant and keep the position.
