How a tiny road trip lifted my spirit

February 2018 · 2 min read · Scotland

Our B&B host during our stay in Rhiconich was a very lovely woman by the name of Susan. After we rang her doorbell she was all warmth and loved a chat. Afraid her guests would be cold the heating was turned up almost too much. Well, not almost, her house was really really warm.

While taking care of us by providing a very nice bed, a great breakfast (with real blood sausage from the Hebrides, where here family lives) and more chats, she proved herself to be a very perceptive woman as well.

I had scuffled through her house all day while heavily leaning on my walking stick. She didn't say anything about it, neither did she ask 'what is wrong with you?', a question I'm not always prepared to answer for different reasons.
But at the end of the afternoon she casually mentioned the very beautiful sunset we would see if we went to a specific beach very close-by. She also very casually mentioned we could park very close to the beach and there would not be a lot of walking involved to be able to enjoy it.

The beach indeed was very close to her B&B and from the car windows, I already could see the sky change into a very glorious sunset.

The setting sun changed the beach into a shade of gorgeous pink - a color I have only seen on beaches in Scotland so far.

It was probably the tiniest 'road trip' we made during our month in Scotland, but it lifted my spirit as did the rest of our stay in Susan's B&B.

She may not know, but I will always remember her tiny act(s) of kindness.
