The North-Coast 500: a detour to the Isle of Skye

February 2018 · 4 min read · Scotland

If you ever announce your future trip to Scotland, a lot of people will ask: "are you visiting Skye?" It's a famous Island for its wild beauty, and many people from the UK might plan their holidays in this specific 'Island'.

We were late in planning our stays, and Skye was indeed fully booked before we realized we might want to stay here. In hindsight, we have decided it might take a separate trip to Skye and the Hebrids to truly fulfill our needs to visit places with a lot of time for detailed exploring... So I'm not sorry we did not get to stay on Skye this time around.

We were, however, curious and tried to reach a random point on the map, which was the 'Skye Fairy Pools'. Without really knowing what we were looking for we went on the trip looking for these so-called pools, and drove a lovely road on Skye, which is crazy rewarding itself.

The mountain top

All the way towards the pools I would see this mountaintop. It felt like we were circling it, seeing it from one point, then the other, then the first again, it coming closer and closer towards us.

Then, after trying to reach the pools and being a bit confused on where we would find them, we did reach a parking place. Again, we had the mountaintop in sight, but the parking place was decorated with a lot of plants and some pink flowers. A totally different picture! Of the same mountaintop.

The pools

Excited to finally go see those Fairy Pools I went from the parking lot down a slope. It was not an easy walk, since as a few of you already know, from time to time I have to walk with a walking stick. This was one of those days: I had a lot of pain, but wanted to reach these pools!

But then... We reached a little stream. It was really a very small stream, but it had uneven rocks on both sides, and water was flowing over them. I looked at my foot, I felt how my foot was hurting, I looked again...

I grumbled. Yes, I think I literally grumbled. I saw the following people crossing the small stream:

  • People on flip-flops
  • People walking their dogs (made me feel they took this walk daily)
  • Tiny tiny tiny children with super tiny tiny legs
  • People with very unathletic bodies in general
  • Elderly people with shoes that are really only suitable for a home situation
  • Again: people on flip-flops. I am so jealous of people who think it's normal they can walk on flip-flops

And I just knew I wouldn't be able to cross. There is no way since I've damaged my foot I can handle a bigger shock on that foot, and I already was in pain. Without at least a small jump I would not be able to reach the first slippery rocks. The walking stick would not help me in this case either.

I looked at my boyfriend: "You go", I said. And I just sat down in the grass.

Feeling disappointed. Feeling frustrated. Feeling left out. Feeling limited. Feeling unfree.

But then I looked around and realized where I was. In a truly magnificent landscape, in the middle of Skye, surrounded by beautiful mountaintops. It started raining. I took a few deep breaths. I took a few more pictures with my camera, then and there, just while sitting in the grass and enjoying the rain, and wrote down some notes of the adventure of that day.

A few months later I would share them with you, on Steemit.
