Wellington cable car

April 2018 · 3 min read

Wellington cable car is one of the must-see attractions at Wellington City, New Zealand. The cable takes you from the CBD shopping street of Lambton Quay to the top of a Hill where the Botanic Gardens is located. We took a ride on the Cable Car when we were in Wellington a few weeks ago, after visiting Zealandia in the Morning. The Zealandia shuttle bus took us to the Cable Car station at the Botanic garden.

Because it is at the top of the hill, you can get a good will of the city of Wellington here, perching on the side of the Wellington harbour, spreading onto nearby hills. You can also make out the snowy caps of the Southern Alps in the distance. You can also get a good postcard view of Wellington and its cable car by standing right at the corner of the viewing platform outside of the station on the Botanic Garden side.

The first version of the cable car was opened in 1902, as a more convenient way to get people up onto the hilly districts. The Cable car is still being used as a major public transport, serving mid-hill residences as well as University students from Victoria University whose campus is also located mid-hill. For those who are interested in more of the history of the Cable car there is a Cable Car museum next to the station, showing casing different aspects of the cable car’s history and construction, as well as two historical cable car trams that are on displayed. It was interesting to know that the area actually has a lot of private cable cars, some as simple as just a trolley and a rail, as people try to find different ways to get to where they want quicker.

The one-way ride from Botanic Garden takes only about 5 minutes, stopping at 3 stations before reaching Lambton Quay. The trip cost $4.00 one way for an adult and $2.00 for a child, and you don’t pay until you get to the Lambton Quay side of the station. When we went down the tunnel, there were flashing decorative lights, injecting beautiful colours into the dark tunnel. Extraordinarily magical!

Wellington Cable car is an icon to the city and can be visited even if you have only have a couple of hours. You can even make it a relaxing half day trip, visiting the hill top Botanic Garden or the Wellington Observatory as well. I would definitely recommend it to those of you travelling to the city.
