Yangtze River Cable car

Yangtze River Cable car

May 2018 · 3 min read · Chongqing

One of the best way to view Chongqing is via the Yangtze River Cable car. Originally built as a everyday transport for locals to cross the river, it is now a popular tourist attraction as it offers unbeatable view of both side of the Yangtze River banks. To get to the cable car, one can take metro line 1 to Xiaoshizi station and the cable car is right next to the exit. After purchasing the ticket outside of the station, we proceeded upstairs to wait for the cable car.

The cable car does not have seats, and it can fit about 20 people, so to get a good view, try to be the first or the last batch of people to go in so that you can stand next to the window. Chongqing is a city build in between mountains with a extremely hilly terrain. Therefore, dense high-rise buildings are a necessity to pack in the large population. High Rise apartment buildings are seen on both sides of the river banks, which is connected by one of the many bridges in the city. You can also see some traditional architecture here and there as well.

After a short ride we arrived to the station on the opposite side of the river. From here we get a beautiful view of the Chongqing skyline. The Chongqing CBD lies on a peninsula, at the crossing between Jialing River and the Yangtze River, and so from this of the bank it looked like the city was on an island. To be honest, there were more skyscrapers then I expected as I have never associated Chongqing as a metropolis. But it is, and the skyline is comparable to more famous cities such as Hong Kong or Shanghai. After all, Chongqing is the most populous direct controlled administrative region of China.

There is no good transportation option (for travellers) from this side of the river, so we took the cable car back to the CBD. On the way we chose to stand on the other side so that we get a different view. It was a rainy day, so the visibility was not great, but you can still see the skyline and the many boats going up and down the river.

As we approached the CBD station, we could observe the apartments along the river bank very closely and see how cramped they really are. It reminded me of the dense and cramped housing estates in Hong Kong.

Although the round trip across the Yangtze River on the cable only last about 10 minutes, it was worth every minute of it. It is the perfect way to know Chongqing for those who only have a short time in the city.
