Mærrapanna naturreservat and the mystery of Mateusz’s death.

Rezerwat Mærrapanna jest ciekawym miejscem na jednodniową wycieczkę z Oslo. Jest to półwysep skalny, w centralnej części częściowo porośnięty niskimi drzewami i krzewami położony na zachód od miasta Fredrikstad u szerokiego ujścia Fjordu Oslo (Oslofjorden).

Poniższe zdjęcia pochodzą z lat 2016-2020, gdyż odwiedzałem to miejsce kilkukrotnie.

The Mærrapanna Nature Reserve is an interesting destination for a day trip from Oslo. It is a rocky peninsula, in the central part partially covered with low trees and shrubs, located west of the city of Fredrikstad at the wide mouth of the Oslo Fjord (Oslofjorden).

The photos below are from 2016-2020, because I have visited this place several times.

Rezerwat przyrody Mærrapanna został utworzony 21 czerwca 1996 r. i zajmuje powierzchnię nieco ponad 96 hektarów. W jego obszarze znajduje się częściowo podmokły obszar leśny obfitujący w rzadkie gatunki roślin oraz właściwy półwysep Mærrapanna.

The Mærrapanna Nature Reserve was established on June 21, 1996 and covers an area of ​​just over 96 hectares. It is home to a partially wet forest area with rare plant species and the actual Mærrapanna peninsula.

Na terenie rezerwatu dostęny jest parking oraz kąpielisko. Dozwolone jest tutaj grillowanie, nawet dostępny jest specjalny kosz na zużyte jednorazowe grille („engangsgrill”).

Granitowe skały Mærrapanny maja charakterystyczny, żółto-pomarańczowy kolor. Centralna część półwyspu porośnięta jest niskimi drzewami, głównie sosnami, przeplatanymi okazjonalnie dzikimi drzewami owocowymi, pochodzącymi z czasów, kiedy na tym obszarze znajdowało się kilka małych gospodarstw.

Ciekawostką, o której przeczytałem, jest obecność tzw. „roślin balastowych”, wyrosłych z nasion, które dostały się tutaj z piaskiem balastowym przewożonym przez statki.

There is a parking lot and a bathing area in the Reserve. Grilling is allowed here, there is even a special basket for used disposable grills ("engangsgrill").

Mærrapanna's granite rocks have a characteristic yellow-orange color. The central part of the peninsula is covered with low trees, mostly pine trees, interspersed with occasional wild fruit trees, dating from the time when there were several small farms in this area.

An interesting fact that I read about is the presence of the so-called "Ballast plants", grown from seeds that got here with ballast sand carried by ships.

W środkowej części półwyspu, bliżej morza, znajduje się sporych rozmiarów, uschnięty korzeń drzewa, na którym ktoś wyrył słowa "MATEUSZ RIP". Jak zginął Mateusz, o tym internet głucho milczy. Czy przydarzył mu się wypadek, może podczas kąpieli u skalistych wybrzeży, czy popełnił samobójstwo, czy to jeszcze inna historia? W każdym razie nie udało mi się tego ustalić. Podczas pierwszej mojej wizyty, w 2016 roku, pod tym miejscem pamiątkowym stały jeszcze znicze. W 2020 roku już ich nie było, a napis powoli zaczynał się zacierać...

In the central part of the peninsula, closer to the sea, there is a large, withered tree root on which someone has engraved the words "MATEUSZ RIP" (Mateusz is the Polish form of "Matthew"). How Mateusz died, the Internet is silent about it. Did he have an accident, perhaps while bathing on a rocky coast, or did he commit suicide, or is that another story? In any case, I have not been able to found it. During my first visit, in 2016, there were candles at this memorial site. In 2020, they were gone, and the inscription was slowly fading...
