Żywiec - a town in Polish highlands

Od kilku lat Żywiec stał się dla mnie jednym z "bazowych" miast, tzn. takich, w których często bywam czy to dla załatwienia jakichś spraw, czy zakupów. Chociaż znam go od dzieciństwa, gdyż w 1/4 pochodzę z Żywiecczyzny.

For several years, Żywiec has become one of the "base" cities for me, I mean those I visit often, either to do some business or to do shopping. Anyway I have known it since childhood, because I come from this region in 1/4 of my ancestors.

W centrum miasta znajduje się pochodzący prawdopodobnie z XV wieku rynek, otoczony przez staromiejską zabudowę. W kamieniczkach przy rynku znajdują się sklepy i lokale gastronomiczne. Dwa są w mojej opinii godne polecenia: to Burgerownia Mucca (smaczne jedzenie w odróżnieniu od kilku konkurencyjnych lokali w okolicy) oraz Sklep Góralski z góralskimi strojami, wyrobami tradycyjnymi, upominkami. Przy rynku jest też bar rzemieślniczego Browaru Krajcar (a drugi na ulicy Świętokrzyskiej) - niestety od dawna go nie odwiedzałem, bo zwykle jestem kierowcą podczas wizyt w Żywcu.

In the city center there is a market square, probably from the 15th century, surrounded by old town buildings. There are shops and eateries in the tenement houses at the market square. In my opinion, two are worth recommending: Burgerownia Mucca (tasty food unlike several competing establishments in the area) and Sklep Góralski with traditional products and gifts. There is also a craft brewery - the Browar Krajcar by the market square (and another one on Świętokrzyska Street) - unfortunately I haven't visited it for a long time, because I am usually a driver when visiting Żywiec.

Na poniższym zdjęciu widoczny jest budynek Magistratu, pochodzący z połowy XVII wieku, lecz przebudowany w roku 1868.

The photo below shows the building of the Magistrate, dating from the mid-17th century, but rebuilt in 1868.

Blisko Rynku znajduje się Konkatedra Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny pochodząca z XV wieku (rozbudowana w latach 1582-1583).

Close to the Market Square is the Co-Cathedral of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 15th century (extended in 1582-1583).

Przy kościele stała dawniej drewniana dzwonnica. Po pożarze miasta w 1721 roku zbudowano nową - murowaną, której masywna wieża wznosi się tuż przy południowowschodnim rogu Rynku.

A wooden belfry used to stand next to the church. After a fire in the town in 1721, a new one was built, whose massive tower rises right at the south-eastern corner of the Market Square.

W odległości około 250 metrów od Rynku znajduje się liczące ponad sto lat kino Janosik. Pierwotnie nosiło ono nazwę "Urania". Zbudował je w 1906 roku mieszczanin żywiecki Antoni Kasztelnik.

At a distance of about 250 meters from the Market Square, there is an over 100-year-old cinema named "Janosik". Originally it was called "Urania". It was built in 1906 by Antoni Kasztelnik, a Żywiec burgher.

Słynny żywiecki Robot. Legenda zawarta w memach głosi, że kiedy wielkie niebezpieczeństwo będzie groziło Zabłociu (dzielnica Żywca położona na lewym brzegu Soły), Robot zejdzie z szyldu i będzie bronił miekszkańców.

The famous Robot of Żywiec. The legend spread in the memes says that when a great danger threatens Zabłocie (the Żywiec district located on the left bank of the Soła River), the Robot will come down from the signboard and defend the residents.
