️In Tbilisi, there are many parks and green spaces, where you can relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city. That's why Tbilisi is often called by locals 'the city of parks'

One of the oldest parks in Tbilisi known for its trees and dramatic sculptures, is 9th April Park, previously called Alexander's park, on the opposite side from the Georgian Parliament building along Rustaveli Avenue. It was named after the events of 1989 during an anti-Soviet demonstration on the 9th of April, when Soviet troops were deployed to repress the protests for Georgian independence.

In a pattern that would be repeated in many Eastern bloc countries leading up to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Red Army tanks were sent to Tbilisi, and Georgians could see Gorbachev's 'Perestroika' government was not much better than his predecessors.

There wasn't much celebration in the country this year, on the 31st anniversary of Georgian Independence, since we're all stuck at home due to COVID-19.. But April 9th is now a public holiday in Georgia. This day is important to Georgians because it marks such a tragic anniversary, but also one of hope. That's what the holiday is called 'National Unity Day'

Learning about this story helped me to better understand Georgia and what it has been through. It is also humbling and makes me feel grateful for the freedom that we are able to enjoy here today.

Below you can see some of the best pictures of the sculptures in the park that I took on my phone, enjoy!

Take care, and be safe!
