Steem-Hikers are going to Iceland!

Góðan daginn!

So it's happening, we are about to fly to Iceland! The land of Sigur Rós, Björk, wonderful raw landscapes, waterfalls, geysers, glaciers and volcanoes! On March 20th we fly away from Gdansk, Poland and a few hours later we land at the airport in Keflavík. We bought a one way ticket and we are planning to spend a few months there. We plan to find a season job there, save some money for our our hitch-hiking world trip and spend our free time preparing for it, describing the life and nature of this very far from the rest of civilization island.

Our plan

The thing is that, just like in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland... our plan is practically non-existent :D Attempts to find a job and a flat to rent at that distance turned out to be... unsuccessful, so we are flying there without any solid plan. While it is (reportedly) not difficult to get a job on the ground and there is a need for workers everywhere, the rental market in this country is a completely out space, both in terms of prices and availability of flats...

We will spend the first night in Reykjavík and then we will set off southwards towards Akureyri. We plan to stop in every town along the way and ask in every hotel, hostel or guesthouse if they need workers for the season. Besides, we can also ask drivers if they know someone who is looking for employees. This time, however, we will be equipped with a tent, sleeping bags and appropriate equipment for Icelandic weather. Sounds like a mad plan? For sure!

It will be tough, especially as we have a very limited budget, Steem price is not very optimistic and does not belong to the cheapest ones. It may help that I (@saunter) have been learning Icelandic for some time and although I am not able to say or understand much more than presenting myself, I hope that it will make a positive impression on potential employers :) What more, few years ago I visited Iceland as a tourist, so it's not so completely alien to me either.

This is how hitch-hiking looks like in Iceland! :) (@saunter, 2013)

Sjáumst! (See you!)

We would like to cover on our job search and exploring the island as we go, but we'l probably write next post only when we manage to settle a little bit somewhere. It may take a long time, and we must also take into account the scenario that we will completely fail in our quest, and the only thing that will remain will be to return to Poland. However, if everything goes well, you will read about our adventures in Iceland over the next few months. Stressed, but also very excited - we're flying there soon!

Keep your fingers crossed and until next read! :)
