TacoCat’s Travels #144 (Kuala Lumpur): Starstruck at a Free Fancy Dinner! 🌟

January 2022 · 5 min read · Petaling Jaya

Hey Hive!

If you missed the last couple of posts, we're currently on a journey back in mid-March 2019 when we flew to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for an event that Sean got invited to! Since we have friends and family there in KL it also gave us a chance to visit them!

And last week, we visited one of our friends, Dean, whom we met back when we were on college exchange in Finland! He had since graduated and was back in KL so we went to hang out with him at his home and played some games then he brought us to this cool hipster cafe for lunch!

15 March 2019. Friday.

In the evening, Dean drove us back to our hotel so we could get ready for the event that Sean got invited to, which was a hotel banquet hosted by FX Primus at Sheraton Hotel!

FX Primus is a trading broker that Sean used to use a long time ago but even then he didn't use them anymore so we were literally just going for the free food. I think this banquet was a thank you to their investors and users and stuff so there were quite a lot of people there. Most of them looked twice our age though.

But they had even set up some games and booths outside the banquet hall to entertain people like Beat Saber:

And this money grabbing booth where you're in a wind tunnel-like box and you have to grab as much money as you can. I didn't try though since I was wearing a dress so Sean went to give it a go. There wasn't much cash left though so it was kinda difficult to get anything.

But hey at least Sean grabbed a couple of notes! I think it was 7RM or something but it was only 10 seconds too, here's the video:

Then it was time for us to go into the banquet hall!

Here was the menu for the dinner, which featured a lot of seafood so Sean wasn't too keen but I think he was okay with most of them except the prawns.

It actually looked pretty alright other than the fruit salad since I'm not really a fan of cold food. But we had the host come in and introduce the event while we were served the appetiser. The deep fried money bag was alright but the prawn and fruit salad was meh.

I apologise for the lighting in most of these; I don't know what's up with banquet halls in hotels and their bad lighting but oh well.

Next was the Crab Roe Soup with Shredded Fish Maw and Dried Seafood which was pretty tasty!

The third course was the Steamed Live Golden Snapper and it was pretty good! It was a little cold though and could have used more sauce or seasoning but it was alright.

The next one was the Deep Fried Boneless Chicken with Lemon Mayonnaise Sauce which was definitely one of the best courses! The lemon mayo was interesting but the chicken itself was good! A little dry but still alright!

The whole time we were getting served the different courses the host of the event was talking and entertaining the audience in some way, talking to people in the audience and asking questions like how they found FX Primus. Luckily we were sitting at the back if not I wouldn't know what to say.

The 5th course was the Fried Tiger Prawn with Oatmeal and Golden Garlic. I thought the prawns would be peeled for me already or be like cereal prawn so this was kind of a disappointment. Luckily they gave us forks and spoons though but it was still annoying to peel the prawns.

Next was the Braised Bean Root with Black Mushroom and Vegetables! I'm not sure what bean root is, but it looked like beancurd? The vegetables were broccoli so it was good!

There was also a musical performance with an amazing singer! I don't know if she was famous or anything, but she looked really cool and her voice was awesome! We really enjoyed listening to her performance and she definitely made our night!

Finally the last course was Thai Style Pineapple Fried Rice with Seafood!

And for dessert, we had Chilled Aloe Vera with Dried Logan!

After the dinner we went out and took some pictures! We would've taken before the dinner but it was too crowded then. But I was soo stuffed from the dinner!

When we went to the lobby we actually saw the singer there and Sean hurriedly asked if we could grab a photo with her and she was so nice! We looked her up and I think she only has Facebook page but her name is Dakhari Shadow Reign and she's from Zimbabwe! I remember she sang Shallow by Lady Gaga so well! We told her we loved her singing and she even complimented my dress! I felt so honoured!

Her performance was definitely our favourite part of the night and we were pretty spent after that so we went back to our hotel to relax and unwind. But what a night!

Thanks so much for reading!
