TacoCat’s Travels (Finland) #26: Sunset in Savonlinna 🌇

August 2019 · 5 min read · Mainland Finland

Hey Steemit!

So in the previous travel post, we visited the famous Olavinlinna castle in Savonlinna! It was very grand and full of history; I bet history and architecture buffs would love it!

Apologies for the picture quality, I think steemblogs has a problem translating the same picture quality to steemit, unfortunately. 😕

After exploring the castle pretty thoroughly, I mentioned at the end of the last post that we proceeded to explore the surrounding areas to see what else there was to see, so here-we-go! Sorry for the long cliffhanger!

2 June 2018. Saturday.

Just opposite the castle, there was this stone structure and a statue in the nearby park.

Too bad the inscriptions are in Finnish so I couldn't understand them

While crossing the bridge back to the mainland, we saw some cute doggos! Looks like they were gonna visit the castle too!

We also saw a little gosling in the river who was separated from its family! 😯 I hope it made it back!

Just across the river from the castle was the Savonlinna museum; also called Savonlinnan Maakuntamuseo!

We decided to walk a little further out and we saw soooo many geese!

We even saw some geese with their babies! The little ones are so cute! 😍

We saw some mallard ducks just chillin' on the river bank too!

Here's a video I took of all the birdies we saw!

And another video of the geese doing a silly dance while swimming! 😄

Look at their necks bouncing!

After we were done observing the fauna, we decided to head into the museum to cool off.

Obviously you'd need to pay to see the entirety of it, and I assume it would've been in Finnish/Swedish. Since neither of us are really museum-savvy, we just looked at what we could see from the waiting room. It wasn't much, but from the looks of it the museum had a very nautical theme. Makes sense though, since savonlinna lies in the intersection of several large lakes.

We took a break in the gift shop before walking back to the city centre.

We saw some more duckies in the grass on our way back!

We soon got tired from all that walking so we decided to head back to our hotel first before dinnertime. When we got back we saw a huge crowd gathered outside the casino building (our hotel was called Spa Hotel Casino)! It looked like a wedding, or maybe a prom of some kind.

We took a short nap in our hotel room and left in the "evening" to find some dinner. Of course it's not technically "evening" at least weather-wise, because it was still quite bright out even at 7pm thanks to the summer weather!

I thought this shot of the sky was so cool!

We soon found a Chinese restaurant and decided to try it out, since it had been a pretty long time since we had Asian food.

We bought a plate of fried rice and stir-fried noodles to share. It was pretty average I suppose. I remember one of the dishes being quite plain though.

Since it was gonna be our last day here in Savonlinna, we decided to walk around the town a little bit more, and enjoy the sunset as well. And it's a good thing we did because we saw a few more doggos!

One of the doggos was so excited to go for a swim and he did! Lucky the lakes are all pretty clean here in Finland!

We watched them for a little while before they walked off, shaking their fur of water.

It was still kinda warm even with the sun slowly descending so we decided to get some ice cream for dessert.

This ice cream looked interesting so we decided to give it a try

The green one was apple cola, and the other is mango strawberry if I'm not wrong. It was kinda too sweet though.

We walked back to the river near our hotel and I got a few more great sunset shots!

Look at the perfect reflection in the water

We decided to take a walk along the river and loop back to our hotel, just enjoying the serenity of nature.

We found some old cottage style buildings on our walk, that blended in well with the surroundings.

I love this shot too; just seeing the tower in the background and the light ripples in the lake.

That's pretty much it for our weekend trip! The next day we headed back to the bus station to catch out bus back to Mikkeli!
