Hi Steemers! Did you know that the breakwater at the end of the St Kilda pier is home to approximately 1200 Little (Blue Fairy) penguins?.. And that you can see these cute little creatures every single day of the year?
The best time of day to the see them is just before sunset. You might be lucky to see a couple in between the rocks during the day but you will defintely see more as they make their way from the sea, to their nests as it gets darker.
As you're waiting for the sun to disappear and the penguins to return, you can admire the Melbourne city skyscrapers in the distance.
Did I mention you are also in a prime location to watch the sunset? Then it isn't long before you start seeing penguins pop up from under the bridge and make their way up into the rocks.
There are penguin guides on site, so if you have any questions they are happy to answer them. They are also there to enforce some very important rules to protect these little guys.
Don't get too close to the penguins if they are walking past. Don't climb on the rocks and stay behind the barriers when there are some.
Don't use a camera flash, smartphone light or flash light. Only light acceptable is a red light.
It's awesome to see these little penguins up close and living in the wild, so close to the city.

The St Kilda pier is home to one of the two colonies of penguins in the world, that live on a man made structure. Which is pretty interesting and worth a visit for that alone! The pier is open 24/7, year round so anytime is a good time to see them... Although they are a little less active in the winter months but aren't we all ๐
