San Matteo in Muslone

May 2022 · 2 min read · Gargnano

According to tradition, the church dedicated to St. Matthew the Apostle was built in the 15th century at the request of the new feudal lord Maffeo (or Matteo) Medalli. The building, with a single nave and side altars, houses inside some paintings by the quite famous Garda painter Andrea Bertanza from the first half of the 17th century, including one of his most important works on the main altar (, Madonna with Child and Gloriole and Saints Matthew, Herculan and Zeno*) signed by him. Also of unique value is the tabernacle in gilded wood, a work of the Pialorsi (also called Boscai) from the Sabbia valley. On the image of a side altar with Saints Rocco and Anthony venerating the Eucharist, there is a stylised one at the bottom. Representation of the church and fort of Muslone. The church tower, built at the same time, is accessible from the nave and has five bells, two of which are still of original origin. To the side of the church, as if suspended above the lake, is the remarkable former rectory. (The parish is now incorporated into that of Gargnano). The house has only recently been sold and restored by private hands.
