Traveling the World #178 - Exploring Meguro City @ Tokyo, Japan

Hi Everyone,

On the way to visit the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, we walked through the streets of Meguro City. It was a nice walk through the quiet suburb streets compared to the busy Shinjuku or Ikebukuro streets in Tokyo. Just as we walked out of the station, we saw a street with a few food outlets ready for business.

It was approaching lunchtime, people at work slowly walk out deciding what they wanted for lunch. It was a less busy suburb and I like surroundings with people but not crowded. There were bakeries, Chinese restaurants, steak houses, ramen restaurants so people are spoilt for choices. There are also a few convenient stores which also sell some decent meals if they can’t sit down for lunch. As we kept walking, we were walking to a more residential area. At one point I thought I was lost but upon checking the map, we were in the right direction.

Japanese houses are very different from Sydney. As they are limited in space, they make good use of their balcony spaces. Rods are put up on the ceiling and people will hang their washing out to dry. Bikes are parked outside the unit with a few people owning cars parked on the streets. Most of the units or houses in the area have a gate to keep outsiders out and the gates are all well maintained. The Japanese people do look after everything carefully.

I also found a street library or the Japanese call it books exchange. Here people will bring some books they have read and take what they wanted to read. The concept is very much of a street library and the books could also be borrowed after someone has finished with their books. It’s a great way to save money and the environment.

We finally go to the cafe and we saw Meguro River. Here during spring, there are lines of Cherry Blossoms and is a hot spot for those wanting to take photos. It was a nice and peaceful area and I was glad I had the opportunity to see the suburb side of Tokyo on this trip and enjoy the river at the end of it.

今次去東京，我特意去目黒區看看. 原路可以看見東京安靜的一面，不像池袋或新宿你們繁忙，人多的感覺. 我們下火車的時間剛剛是吃午飯的時候所以有很多上班的人在找東西吃. 這條街有不同的餐館，麵店，包店等等. 慢慢走過就看見一點民居，以為走錯路但看見 GPS 是對的. 之後就看家一個街頭圖書館, 跟我們 Sydney 一樣都可以這裡拿書看或放一些自己看過的書讓其他人慢慢看. 過了一會就看見目黒去最有名的目黒川. 春天就可以在這裡看到櫻花，會堆滿人來看花和拍照.
