How to prepare for super low budget accomodations in Southeast Asia [EN/DE]

Hey guys! Today I have neither my best photos, nor a travel report for you. Much more I would like to present you this time an article, which might help you, if you plan to travel with low budget to Southeast Asia and like me, always want to have your own room. In many Southeast Asian countries it is possible to get a room including your own bathroom, air conditioning, WiFi and sometimes even breakfast for about 10$ per night, but you should be aware of the compromises you have to make for such a low price.

Hallo Leute!

I myself have a few years of experience travelling through these countries. I like to read and write reviews for accommodations. The cheapest rooms are always criticized for the same things and therefore I would like to show you which things they are and how you can prepare for them!

1.) Poor sound insulation/Schlechte Schallisolierung

girl-1990347_1920.jpg

Especially in older, unrenovated buildings in Southeast Asia, windows and doors are often very poorly insulated or not insulated at all. Street noise or noises from adjoining rooms can easily make you unable to sleep. So don't expect a western standard and take either earplugs or noise-canceling headphones with you. I would estimate that only one in ten budget accommodations has proper insulation and really quiet rooms.

2.) No shower cubicle/Keine Duschkabine

shower-1027904_1920.jpg

What you will also not find in at least nine out of ten budget accommodations is a separate shower cubicle. There is also no shower curtain. If you take a shower, the sink and toilet will get wet, for example. At first this is very unfamiliar and annoying, but you get used to it over time. Try to plan for showering at the end of your visit to the bathroom and let it dry with the door and window open - it usually doesn't take long. Warm water is also not a matter of course in very cheap accommodations. However, the tap water in the hot regions of Asia is almost lukewarm anyway and with a little overcoming also suitable for showering. You will survive it!

3.) Irregular room service/Unregelmäßiger Zimmerservice

swan-200461_1920.jpg

Please do not expect your room to be cleaned and the bed to be made every day. If you behave normally, this is not necessary and it is usually sufficient to ask for cleaning or fresh towels at the reception. As far as general cleanliness is concerned, you should be aware that there might be some dusty cupboards or some mould between the bathroom tiles. As for the cleanliness of the bed linen, I haven't had any bad experiences yet.

4.) No Elevator/Kein Lift

architecture-1868378_1920.jpg

I would roughly estimate that at least 7 out of 10 budget accommodations do not have a lift. If you want to spend the night cheaply, then you should plan to carry your luggage up a narrow staircase to the fourth floor sometimes. If it's not possible for you, the staff will be happy to help you and if you manage it on your own, it won't hurt you - you will be able to handle it!

5.) Sockets placed in a few and unfavourable positions/Wenig und ungünstig platzierte Steckdosen

socket-1794616_1920.jpg

The sockets in Southeast Asia are often of very poor quality, which can be seen from the fact that the plugs do not snap into place and fall out very easily. Especially the old buildings of the budget accommodations often have few sockets, which are located in very unfavourable places. If you have room in your luggage, it is best to take a socket distributor with a long cable with you!

If you prepare yourself for these five points, you can find very acceptable accommodations for about 10$/night and thereby save a lot of money on your travels in Southeast Asia. What you shouldn't do, however, is to expect a high standard at a ridiculous price and then write disappointing reviews and give bad ratings. Your expectations should correspond to the price at which you book, then nothing stands in the way of a relaxed journey!

See you soon/Bis bald!
Stefan
