My Balkan-Roadtrip 2018: Matka Canyon & Mount Vodno [EN/DE]

Good morning from Skopje! Two beautiful, sunny days have passed since my last post and there is a lot to report again. I spent the weekend in the two places where also the inhabitants of Skopje go to relax and recover.

Guten Morgen aus Skopje! Zwei wunderschöne, sonnige Tage sind seit meinem letzen Post vergangen und es gibt wieder einiges zu berichten. Ich habe das Wochenende an den beiden Orten verbracht, an denen sich auch die Einwohner von Skopje entspannen und erholen.

Let's start with Saturday. Since I spent the whole morning in bed, my day started with lunch, which you can see here. The toast with fries costs the equivalent of 1,62€ and was totally delicious. You see, it doesn't always have to be Southeast Asia if you want to travel cheap, some European countries are also excellent destinations for budget backpackers.

Fangen wir mal mit dem Samstag an. Da ich den ganzen Vormittag im Bett verbrachte, startete mein Tag erst mit dem Mittagessen, das ihr hier sehen könnt. Der Toast mit Pommes kostet umgerechnet 1,62€ und war total lecker. Ihr seht, es muss nicht immer Südostasien sein, wenn man günstig Reisen will, auch einige europäische Länder bieten sich als Reiseziele für Budget-Backpacker an.

After the meal I drove with my car the short distance from the city center, to Matka Canyon. The drive took only half an hour, no wonder that there is quite a lot going on there at the weekend.

Nach dem Essen fuhr ich dann mit meinem Auto die kurze Strecke von der Innenstadt, zum Matka Canyon. Die Fahrt dauerte nur eine knappe halbe Stunde, kein Wunder, dass hier am Wochenende recht viel los ist.

Here you can already see the wall of the dam. Behind it begins the actual canyon with the Matka lake, whose crystal clear water shimmers beautifully emerald green.

Hier seht ihr schon die Mauer des Staudammes. Dahinter beginnt der eigentliche Canyon mit dem Matka See, dessen glasklares Wasser wunderschön smaragdgrün schimmert.

Either on foot, along the steep field walls, or by excursion boat, or by canoe you can explore the gorge. I decided on the first variant.

Entweder zu Fuß, an den steilen Feldwänden entlang, per Ausflugsboot, oder per Kanu kann man die Schlucht erkunden. Ich entschied mich für die erste Variante.

Again and again there are magnificent views of the beautiful nature. Finding a quiet place to take pictures can be difficult on sunny weekends though due to the crowds of visitors.

Immer wieder bieten sich grandiose Ausblicke auf die wunderschöne Natur. Ein ruhiges Plätzchen zum Fotografieren zu finden, kann durch den Besucherandrang an sonnigen Wochenenden jedoch schwierig werden.

On the way you will also meet this pretty little church and some restaurants with cosy terraces, which offer a great lake view.

Unterwegs begegnet man auch dieser hübschen, kleinen Kirche und einigen Restaurants mit gemütlichen Terrassen, die einen tollen Seeblick bieten.

After some relaxing hours in the nature, I went by car back to the city center of Skopje.

Nach einigen erholsamen Stunden in der Natur, ging es mit dem Auto wieder zurück in die Innenstadt von Skopje.

My destination yesterday was Skopje's local mountain, Vodno, with its huge summit cross, which can be seen just after crossing the border from Serbia in the distance. After a quarter of an hour by car I reached the cable car station and paid exactly the same amount for the ascent and descent as for my lunch the day before, 100 denar, or the equivalent of 1.62€.

Mein gestriges Reiseziel war Skopjes Hausberg, Vodno, mit seinem riesigen Gipfelkreuz, das man schon knapp nach dem Grenzübergang von Serbien in der Ferne erkennen kann. Nach einer viertel Stunde Autofahrt erreichte ich die Seilbahnstation und bezahlte exakt gleich viel für die Berg- und Talfahrt, wie für mein Mittagessen am Vortag, 100 Denar, oder umgerechnet 1,62€.

The summit region of the 1,066-metre-high mountain offers spectacular views in all directions. Unfortunately the weather in the last days was always slightly hazy, which clouded the view a bit, but nevertheless, it was amazing, just see for yourself:

Die Gipfelregion des 1.066 Meter hohen Berges bietet in alle Richtungen spektakuläre Ausblicke. Leider war das Wetter in den letzten Tagen immer ganz leicht diesig, was die Aussicht etwas trübte, das ist aber schon Jammern auf hohem Niveau, seht einfach selbst:

It's really hard to part with this wonderful place. I also find it worth mentioning that there is free WiFi on the summit. The reasons for returning quickly to the valley are therefore limited 😉

Es fällt wirklich schwer, sich von diesem wundervollen Ort zu trennen. Erwähnenswert finde ich noch, dass es auf dem Gipfel kostenloses WiFi gibt. Die Gründe, schnell wieder ins Tal zu fahren, halten sich also in Grenzen 😉

Back in the old town, I had a large portion of Cevapcici for refreshment, without which no Balkan trip is complete anyway. They are made slightly different in each of the Balkan countries. My favorite is the Bosnian version, but the Macedonian version is my new number two since yesterday.

Wieder in der Altstadt angekommen, musste erstmal eine große Portion Cevapcici zur Stärkung her, ohne die sowieso kein Balkantrip komplett ist. Sie werden in jedem der Balkanländer etwas anders zubereitet. Mein Favorit ist die bosnische Version, doch die mazedonische Variante ist seit gestern meine neue Nummer zwei.

Now I am already about to start the next part of my journey. Today I continue to Sofia. I would have liked to go still further south, but time is too short overall. Nevertheless, I still have some exciting places ahead and of course I will have another interim report for you in the next few days. Until then, have a nice week!

Jetzt stehe ich schon in den Startlöchern für die nächste Etappe. Heute geht es weiter nach Sofia. Gerne hätte ich mich noch weiter Richtung Süden orientiert, aber dafür ist die Zeit insgesamt zu kurz. Trotzdem stehen mir noch einige spannende Ziele bevor und natürlich kommt in den nächsten Tagen der nächste Zwischenbericht für euch. Bis dahin wünsch eich euch eine schöne Woche!
