TROPEA - The Pearl of Calabria [EN/DE]

Hello Steemians! The summer in Europe is not far away, so if you want to swim in European waters this year, it's time to start planning your holidays! My recommendation for you is a small town in a country whose beautiful seaside towns would be enough for a lifetime to spend a different dream beach holiday every year. Tropea is located in the very south of Italy at the tip of the boot. This romantic place, which is located on a fourty meter high rock above a beautiful white sandy beach, was completely unknown to me until 2014. Just coincidentally I saw a photo of the city, but I didn't know where this place was or what its name was. Only after some research I could relate the photo to the paradisically sounding name Tropea and I knew immediately that I wanted to go there!

Hallo Steemianer! Der Sommer in Europa ist nicht mehr weit, falls ihr dieses Jahr also in europäischen Gewässern baden wollt, wird es Zeit, langsam an die Urlaubsplanung zu denken! Meine Empfehlung für euch ist eine kleine Stadt in einem Land, dessen wunderschöne Badeorte wohl für ein ganzes Leben ausreichen würden, um jedes Jahr einen anderen traumhaften Strandurlaub zu verbringen. Tropea befindet sich ganz im Süden Italiens an der Stiefelspitze. Dieser romantische Ort, der sich auf einem vierzig Meter hohen Felsen über einem wunderschönen, weißen Sandstrand befindet, war mir bis 2014 völlig unbekannt. Nur zufällig sah ich mal ein Foto der Stadt, wusste aber weder wo sich dieser Ort befindet, noch wie er heißt. Erst nach etwas Recherche konnte ich das Foto dem paradiesisch klingenden Namen, Tropea zuordnen und wusste sofort, da will ich hin!

Not only the city itself, but also the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola, which you can see on the cover photo, is located on a white rock, directly at the sea. Right next to it you can find this dream beach. It's the main beach of the town, but there are many others where you can also rent sunbeds and umbrellas at reasonable prices.

Nicht nur die Stadt selbst, sondern auch die Wallfahrtskirche Santa Maria dell’Isola, die ihr auf dem Titelfoto sehen könnt, befindet sich auf einem weißen Felsen, direkt am Meer. Gleich daneben, findet man diesen Traumstrand. Es ist der eigentliche Hauptstrand der Stadt, es gibt aber noch viele andere, an denen man sich auch Liegen und Schirme zu halbwegs günstigen Preisen mieten kann.

The idyllic center of the approximately 6,000 inhabitants counting city offers cosy cafés, restaurants and many small boutiques and shops. The highlight, however, are the panorama terraces.

Das idyllische Zentrum der ungefähr 6.000 Einwohner zählenden Stadt, bietet gemütliche Cafés, Restaurants und viele kleine Boutiquen und Shops. Das Highlight sind aber auf jeden Fall die Aussichtsterrassen.

The sunsets are particularly beautiful to watch. Because of the orientation of the city towards the west, you can watch the sun sink into the sea when the weather is clear. You can also see the small volcanic island of Stromboli in the distance (at the left in the picture).

Besonders schön zu beobachten sind die Sonnenuntergänge. Durch die Ausrichtung der Stadt, Richtung Westen, könnt ihr der Sonne bei klarem Wetter dabei zusehen, wie sie im Meer versinkt. Außerdem könnt ihr in der Ferne, die kleine Vulkaninsel, Stromboli erkennen (links im Bild).

Although the volcano is active, the island is inhabited and you can explore it on a day trip. At night, if you are lucky, you can even observe some lava eruptions.

Obwohl der Vulkan aktiv ist, ist die Insel bewohnt und ihr könnt, sie bei einem Tagesausflug erkunden. Nachts könnt ihr, wenn ihr Glück habt, sogar einzelne Lavaeruptionen beobachten.

The small island of Panarea is also interesting. Like Stormboli, it belongs to the archipelago of the Lipari Islands. You can also explore more than one island within one day. There are several combinations to choose from, when booking excursions.

Ebenfalls interessant ist die kleine Insel Panarea. Wie auch Stormboli, gehört sie zum Archipel der liparischen Inseln. Ihr könnt auch mehrere Inseln an einem Tag erkunden. Es gibt verschiedene Kombinationen, aus denen ihr beim Buchen der Ausflugsschiffe wählen könnt.

The region around Tropea, also known as Costa Viola, is famous for its red onions. This regional speciality can be seen again and again at numerous market stalls.

Die Region um Tropea, die auch als Costa Viola bezeichnet wird, ist bekannt für ihre roten Zwiebeln. Diese regionale Spezialität sieht man immer wieder an zahlreichen Verkaufsständen.

The viewpoint "Capo Vaticano" is only a short train ride from Tropea and is ideal for a relaxing walk with spectacular views. Also popular is the neighbouring town of Pizzo, where the delicious dessert "Tartufo" comes from.

Der Aussichtpunkt „Capo Vaticano“ ist nur eine kurze Zugfahrt von Tropea entfernt und bietet sich für einen gemütlichen Spaziergang mit spektakulärer Aussicht an. Ebenfalls beliebt, ist der benachbarte Ort, Pizzo, aus dem die köstliche Nachspeise, "Tartufo" stammt.

Actually it's hard to believe that Calabria and especially Tropea are still an insider tip in Italy compared to other regions. At the time of my visit at the end of June, the city was absolutely not overcrowded by tourists and one could enjoy the Italian flair to the fullest. If you are still looking for a holiday destination for this summer, I can really recommend you to experience the beauty of Tropea by yourselves!

Eigentlich ist es kaum zu glauben, dass Kalabrien und vor Allem Tropea noch immer ein Geheimtipp in Italien sind, verglichen mit anderen Regionen. Zur Zeit meines Besuchs Ende Juni, war die Stadt absolut nicht überlaufen von Touristen und man konnte das italienische Flair in vollen Zügen genießen. Falls ihr noch auf der Suche nach einer Urlaubsdestination für diesen Sommer seid, kann ich euch wirklich empfehlen, die Schönheit von Tropea mal selbst zu erleben!
