A Beautiful Spot by the River (Portugal)

A Beautiful Spot by the River (Portugal)

October 2019 · 2 min read · Aldeia do Mato e Souto

I found this unfinished habitation a few years back, by the fluvial beach of Aldeia do Mato, a tiny little town in the center of Portugal, but with an awesome coastline by the river!

This project had no signs of life and the space was full of dirt and cobwebs. It seemed abandoned. Even the sign that said something was approved for development was falling off...

I wonder if it was ever completed?

Its location couldn't be any better for a vacation. This is a tranquil part of the river Zêzere, with very little currents. It's perfectly safe to swim. And there are lots of fish swimming all around you. Don't worry, they won't bite. They come here to run away from the fishermen, as they know that people don't fish on the same spot where they swim! 😂

Despite being a small beach it is usually pretty crowded in the Summer. No wonder! This is a small piece of paradise, specially on windy days. Since it's surrounded by hills, the wind is usually very mild in this spot. Sorry, no surf for you, kids.

Even though surf isn't an option, this is a perfect place for water sports and alike. There is always plenty of stuff going on, from canoeing to jet-skiing. Some of the equipment is available for rent but it's more common to see folks bringing over their own gear... boats, canoes, jetskis, you name it.
