Sunday Cycling to Rusokastro area

December 2019 · 2 min read · Burgas

This Sunday I was cycling my bike over 70 km with @outlinez and @fog043 to visit Rusokaston - medieval fortress and a small cave located in the area.

We left Burgas city early in the morning. We passed the Gorno Ezerovo neighborhood.

We took the old road from Gorno Ezerovo career.

Gorno Ezerovo career is located 3 km southwest of Gorno Ezerovo. It has two installations for the production of crushed stone fractions.
We entered in the village Cherni vrah.

The temple in the village Cherni vrah “St. Simeon Stulpnik ”- built in 1939.

We crossed the villages Polski Izvor, Trastikovo and Livada.

After village Polski Izvor:

Village Trastikovo:

Orthodox church in the Trastikovo "St.Dimitar".

We crossed a high bridge with beautiful views.

A few hours later we reached Rusokastro.

The fortress and the sanctuary are located on a high hill 3 km north of the village.

It is surrounded by the Rusokastrenska River on three sides.

The fortress is on the highest part of the hill. After climbing a steep path, we arrived.

A magnificent view is revealed from the top of the fortress.

The fortress is one of the largest fortresses in Southeastern Bulgaria and interesting discoveries have been made in recent years. I'll tell more in my other account @myfreshes.

In the Rusokastron fortress was located the monastery "St. Georgi ”, whose creation dates back to the V-VI c.

In 2007, the monastery church of St. George the Victorious was restored with donations from the Rusokastron Foundation. It is located on the upper terrace of the hill.

On the path that goes from the church, one can reach the cave-sanctuary “Rusina dupka”. According to archaeologists, there is evidence that this place was a sanctuary during the Thracian times.
