Hiking trip to "The Rockfall"

October 2022 · 3 min read · Plovdiv

Last month, with my friends and @nanast, wewe spent some time in the vicinity of village Mutenitsa.

We had heard about unique rock formations called "The Rockfall" or "Rocking Stones", over Mutenitsa and after visiting other rock formations in the vicinity, we decided to go to these as well.

The place is located in Sredna Gora, on the southern slope of the Sakárka massif.

We had a great hike, but we didn't follow a marked trail, we went up from the camp where we were staying, following the direction to specific rock formations.

We passed through green meadows.

We met a flock of sheep, and the shepherd directed us where to proceed.

We continued to walk on stones.

We encountered beautiful trees whose roots formed unique shapes with the sandy surface.

I was fascinated by the miniature mosses forming large-scale, fluffy carpets on the rocks.

Looking down there were wonderful views around us.

The more we climbed, the more interesting rocks we discovered.

The huge rock formations are called the Rocking Rocks by the locals because the granite chunks look like rock swings as they are stacked on top of each other.

The rocks are perfectly balanced and even rocked, they do not change their position.

It is believed that the rocks above Mutenica are ancient sanctuaries.

It has been captured that the place has a positive energy field, which during the summer solstice and during other special dates is strengthened even more.

The place is also called the Rockfall because it looks as if the stones have fallen from the sky and scattered in the surrounding area.

It is believed that the megalithic buildings in the locality are related to the practices of the Thracian tribe - Odrisi. According to data, Bulgaria is the center of Thracian culture. Its territory has the largest concentration of Thracian sanctuaries.

In the surroundings of Mutenica there are more sanctuaries and interesting rock formations that we visited. You can see them here

The site is also known as the sanctuary of "Saint Ivan".

We headed in the opposite direction, but this time we followed the designated path, which is located about a kilometer north of the center of the village.

Along the way I enjoyed charming little plants perched on the rocks.

Descending, we discovered more rock platforms and interesting rock formations.

Soon we descended into the plain and entered the village.
