Journey to Belmeken Dam

Journey to Belmeken Dam

September 2022 · 2 min read · Bulgaria

A few days ago with my friends, we visited the Belmeken Dam, located at 1910 m above sea level in Rila Mountain.

Our trip was planned for the Rhodope mountain, but that day we abruptly changed direction and altitude due to unforeseen circumstances.

We set off for the dam from Yundola area.

There is a huge market there with private producers where we stocked up on food and drinks.

We were traveling by car on a narrow asphalted road.

There was a place on the road that caught our attention - fountains made like sculptures of a small and a large bear.

Behind them was a shelter and a hearth.

And when I walked further in I found these beautiful views of the surrounding area.

We continued to the dam.

The view was impressive in combination with the fresh air, forest scent and the calm that hung in the air.

My friends and I approached the water.

We saw stone pyramids built.

Lightning flashed in the distance and loud rumblings of thunder warned of an approaching storm. And the clouds majestically filled the landscape, forming dramatic views.

The meaning of the dam's name is "Famous Place" and it is the highest mountain reservoir in Eastern Rila. The Belmeken Dam is located along the Sestrimska River and is part of the "Belmeken-Sestrimo-Chaira" cascade.

It is the highest dam with an embankment dam on the Balkan Peninsula.

There is a possibility to park cars on both the left and right sides. While we were there, cyclists and motorcyclists passed by.

Near the dam is the National Sport complex "Belmeken" (at 1924 m above sea level), where many Bulgarian athletes train.

We climbed higher to see a more extensive view. Here we were enchanted by the aroma of flowers and herbs. In the distance, a flock of sheep passed.

I can't imagine how beautiful this place will be in winter when the whole surrounding area is covered with snow.

Thank you for stopping by!
