Fischerbastei Die Fischerbastei im Budaer Burgviertel ist ein Touristenmagnet. Nicht nur wegen ihrer mittelalterlich anmutenden Architektur, sondern auch wegen des guten Ausblicks auf die Donau und den Stadtteil Pest mit dem Parlamentsgebäude.
Fisherman's BastionThe Fishermen's Bastion in the Buda Castle District is a tourist attraction. Not only because of its looking like a medieval castle, but also because of the good view of the Danube and the district of Pest district with its parliament building.

Die Fischerbastei liegt auf dem Burgberg, der sich 60 m über dem rechten Donauufer erhebt. Was auf den ersten Blick mit den zahlreichen Treppen, Türmen und Zinnen sowie Resten der alten Stadtmauer an eine mittelalterliche Burg erinnert, ist gerade einmal um die 115 Jahre alt.
The Fisherman's Bastion is situated on the Castle Hill, which rises 60 m above the right bank of the Danube. What at first sight with the numerous stairs, towers and battlements as well as rests of the old city wall reminds of a medieval castle, is just about 115 years old.
Im Mittelalter befand sich an dieser Stelle die Schutzbastei der Fischergilde, deren Aufgabe die Verteidigung des Fischmarktes war. Der Name 'Fischerbastei' erinnert heute noch daran.
In the Middle Ages this was the site of the Fishermen's Guild's Bastion, which defended the fish market. The name 'Fishermen's Bastion' still recalls this today.
Um die letzte Jahrhundertwende wurde an der Stelle der baufälligen Basteimauern ein kitschiges Bauwerk mit neoromanischen Elementen errichtet, das heute als Aussichtsplattform dient und eines der beliebtesten Fotomotive in Ungarns Hauptstadt darstellt.
At the turn of the last century a kitschy building with neoromanic elements was erected on the site of the dilapidated bastion walls. Today it serves as a viewing platform and is one of the most popular photo motifs in Hungary's capital.
Das Bauwerk besteht aus sieben durch Arkadengänge miteinander verbundenen Türmen. Jeder Turm steht für einen der sieben Magyarenstämme, die gegen Ende des 9. Jahrhunderts in der Pannonischen Tiefebene beheimatet waren. Die konische Form der Türme symbolisiert die Zelte, die vermutlich den Magyaren auch als Unterkünfte dienten.
The building has seven towers connected by arcades. Each tower represents one of the seven Magyar tribes that lived in the Pannonian Plain towards the end of the 9th century. The conical shape of the towers symbolizes the tents, which probably also served the Magyars as accommodations.
Die Aussicht ist großartig, an klaren Tagen vermutlich noch um einiges besser.
The view is great, on clear days probably even better.

MatthiaskircheDie Liebfrauenkirche (Mátyás-templom), wie der offizielle Name der Kirche lautet, blickt auf eine bewegte Baugeschichte zurück. Der sakrale Bau wurde ursprünglich im 13. Jahrhundert als romanische Basilika für die deutschen Bürger errichtet.
Matthias Church
The Church of Our Lady (Mátyás-templom), which is the official name, has an eventful building history. The sacred building was originally built in the 13th century as a Romanesque basilica for German citizens.
Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts wurde die Kirche in eine gotische Hallenkirche mit drei Schiffen umgebaut. Die türkischen Besatzer wandelten die Kirche Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts in ihre Hauptmoschee um. Nach der Rückeroberung wurde die Kirche an die Jesiuten übergeben, die sie im Stil des Barock erneuerten.
At the end of the 14th century the church was rebuilt into a Gothic hall church with three naves. The Turkish occupiers transformed the church into their main mosque in the middle of the 16th century. After the reconquest, the church was handed over to the Jesiutes, who renovated it in the Baroque style.
Das heutige gotische Aussehen geht auf umfangreiche Restaurierungsarbeiten Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts zurück. Im Zuge dessen wurde der 80 m hohe Matthiasturm neu gemauert und das Kirchendach mit bunter Zsolnay-Keramik gedeckt. Seit 1987 zählt die Matthiaskirche gemeinsam mit dem Burgviertel zum Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO.

The present Gothic appearance dates back to extensive restoration work at the end of the 19th century. The 80 m high Matthias Tower was rebuilt and the church roof was covered with colourful Zsolnay ceramics. Since 1987 the Matthiaskirche together with the Burgviertel has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Neben der Matthiaskirche, im Vorhof der Fischerbastei, ist König Stephan I. in Form eines Reiterstandbildes verewigt.
In the forecourt of the Fishermen's Bastion, next to the Matthias Church there is an equestrian statue of King Stephen I.
