Als Wahrzeichen der Stadt wird die Hängebrücke gerne von Touristen frequentiert, um vom hügeligen Buda am Westufer der Donau in den flachen, lebhafteren Stadtteil Pest auf der Ostseite zu gelangen und umgekehrt.
Budapest's oldest bridgeDespite frosty temperatures there is a lot going on on the Chain Bridge. As a landmark of the city, the suspension bridge is often frequented by tourists in order to get from the hilly Buda on the west bank to the flat, more lively district of Pest on the east side of the Danube and vice versa.
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts waren Buda und Pest noch zwei unabhängige Städte zu beiden Seiten der Donau. Eine Verbindung war zeitweise nur über eine Pontonbrücke möglich. In den Wintermonaten mussten die Schwimmkörper wegen der Eisschollen abgebaut werden. Das Fehlen einer festen Verbindung über die Donau schränkte den freien Handelsverkehr stark ein.
In the middle of the 19th century Buda and Pest were still two independent towns on both sides of the Danube. Temporarily it was possible to cross the Danube over a pontoon bridge. In the winter months the floats had to be taken down because of the ice floes. The lack of a fixed connection across the Danube restricted free trade.
Der englische Ingenieur William Tierney Clark entwarf 1839 für die damalige Zeit eine kühne Konstruktion: Eine 380 m lange Brücke, die an Spannketten von zwei Pfeilern abgehängt wurde. Die beiden Stützpfeiler erinnern durch ihre Form an Triumphbögen. Die Eisenketten, welche die Konstruktion halten, gaben der Brücke auch ihren Namen.
In 1839, the English engineer William Tierney Clark designed a courageous construction for that time: A 380 m long bridge hanging from tension chains of two pylons. The shape of the two supporting pillars is similar to that of triumphal arches. The iron chains holding the construction also gave the bridge its name.
Gegenüber der Kettenbrücke befindet sich auf der Budaer Seite die Talstation der Budavári Sikló. Die Standseilbahn führt auf den Burgberg, auf dem der gewaltige Burgpalast thront.
Opposite the Chain Bridge on the Buda side is the Budavári Sikló valley station. The funicular railway takes you up to the Castle Hill, where the mighty Buda Castle is located.
