Mit dem Lift ins Himmelsreich. Wien 1713. Die Pest wütet in der Stadt und rafft über 8.000 Menschen hinweg. Die geplagte Bevölkerung leidet und fleht um das Ende der Seuche. Noch im selben Jahr gelobt Kaiser Karl VI. (1685-1740), dem Pestheiligen Karl Borromäus eine Kirche errichten zu lassen. Das kaiserliche Gelübde soll der Pestepidemie ein Ende setzen. 1714 erlischt die Seuche. Zwei Jahre später wird der Grundstein zur Kirche gelegt und nach über 20 Jahren Bauzeit findet im Jahr 1737 die feierliche Einweihung statt.
Elevator to the heavenly kingdom Vienna 1713. the plague rages in the city and claims over 8,000 lives. The suffering population begs for an end to the plague. In the same year Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740) vows to have a church built for the plague saint Charles Borromeo. The imperial vow was to put an end to the plague epidemic. In 1714 the plague ceased. Two years later the foundation stone of the church was laid. After more than 20 years of construction the church could be solemnly consecrated.
Mit der Planung und Ausführung wurde der Hofarchitekt Johann Fischer von Erlach beauftragt. Nach dessen Tod im Jahr 1723 führte sein Sohn das Werk zur Vollendung. Als Baumaterialien wurden vorwiegend Marmor und harter Kaiserstein verwendet. Die Baukosten wurden von sämtlichen Kronländern aufgebracht, aber auch Spanien, das Herzogtum Mailand und die Niederlande wurden zur Kasse gebeten.
Court architect Johann Fischer von Erlach was commissioned with the planning and execution. After his death in 1723, his son brought the work to completion. Marble and hard emperor's stone were mainly used as building materials. All the Crown lands contributed to the construction costs, but Spain, the Duchy of Milan and the Netherlands were also asked to pay.
Vota mea reddam in conspectu timentium deum. "Ich will mein Gelübde erfüllen angesichts derer, die Gott fürchten". Diese Inschrift ist im Giebeldreieck des Portals zu lesen. Darüber ist eine Szene dargestellt, in der ein Engel sein Schwert strafend über die Stadt hält, während Tote weggetragen werden und die Lebenden um ein Ende der Plage flehen.
Vota mea reddam in conspectu timentium deum. "I will fulfill my vows in the face of those who fear God". This inscription can be read in the pediment of the portal. A scene is shown above in which an angel holds his sword punitively over the city while the dead are carried away and the living beg for an end to the plague.
Stilelemente der verschiedensten Epochen und Kulturen vereinigen sich im sakralen Bauwerk. Die Säulenhalle (Portikus) vor dem Eingang erinnert an einen griechisch-römischen Tempel. Die Tempelhalle wird von zwei Triumphsäulen flankiert, deren Reliefs das Leben und Wirken des Hl. Karl Borromäus darstellen.
Stylistic elements of the most diverse epochs and cultures are united in the sacred building. The columned hall (portico) in front of the entrance is reminiscent of a Greek-Roman temple. The temple hall is flanked by two triumphal columns whose reliefs depict the life and work of St. Charles Borromeo.
Reichsadler und Kaiserkrone auf den Säulen weisen auf die imperiale Komponente des Bauwerks hin.
The imperial eagle and imperial crown on the columns indicate the imperial component of the building.
Die Durchfahrten der beiden Glockentürme sind römischen Triumphpforten nachempfunden, die von asiatisch anmutenden Pagodendächern bedeckt sind. Die beiden Engel vor der Kirche symbolisieren das Alte und das Neue Testament.
The passages of the two bell towers are inspired by Roman triumphal gates, which are covered by Asian-style pagoda roofs. The two angels in front of the church symbolize the Old and the New Testament.
In über 70 Meter Höhe erhebt sich die barocke Kuppel, bekrönt von einem goldenen Kreuz, das von weithin sichtbar ist.
At a height of more than 70 meters the baroque dome rises, crowned by a golden cross, which is visible from far away.
Im Inneren entfaltet sich die barocke Pracht. Der Raum erscheint, obwohl nur 40 Meter lang, durch seine Höhe wesentlich größer. Gedämpftes Licht im unteren Bereich und strahlender Lichteinfall durch die großen Hochfenster steigern diese Wirkung.
The baroque splendor unfolds inside. The room, although only 40 meters long, appears considerably larger due to its height. Subdued light in the lower area and radiant incidence of light through the large high windows enhance this effect.
Der feierliche Gesamteindruck wird allerdings durch einen unattraktiven Stahlkoloss in Form eines Baugerüstes getrübt. In ihm führt ein gläserner Panoramalift nach oben in Richtung Himmelreich.
However, the festive overall impression is clouded by an unattractive steel colossus in the form of scaffolding. In it, a glass panorama lift leads upwards towards the kingdom of heaven.
Der Aufzug wurde 2002 im Kirchenraum aufgebaut. Er bot Interessierten die Gelegenheit, die laufenden Renovierungsarbeiten aus nächster Nähe zu beobachten. Da sich der Lift als gute Einnahmequelle erwies, wurde er nicht wie geplant 2005 wieder abgebaut. Gegen eine Gebühr von 8 Euro (Kircheneintritt und Besuch des Museums inklusive) bringt er auch heute noch Besucher auf eine Plattform in 33 Metern Höhe.
The elevator was installed in the church in 2002. It offered interested people the opportunity to observe the ongoing renovation work at close range. As the lift proved to be a good source of income, it was not dismantled again in 2005 as planned. For a fee of 8 euros (including admission to the church and a visit to the museum) it still carries visitors to a platform at a height of 33 meters.
Nun sind noch 118 Stufen zu erklimmen, bevor man im sogenannten "Himmelreich" ankommt und den Deckenfresken zum Greifen nahe ist. Dargestellt sind bildliche Szenen aus dem Leben und Wirken des Heiligen Karl Borromäus, dem die Kirche geweiht ist. Die Fresken stammen von Johann Michael Rottmayr, einem der bedeutendsten Maler der Barockzeit.
Now there are 118 more steps to climb, before you arrive in the so-called "Kingdom of Heaven" and and the ceiling frescos are almost within reach. The frescos depict scenes from the life and work of St. Charles Borromeo, to whom the church is dedicated. The frescoes are by Johann Michael Rottmayr, one of the most important painters of the baroque era.
Es ist schwer vorstellbar, wie Rottmayr noch als 70-jähriger das Gerüst erklomm und seine Arbeit in schwindelerregender Höhe ausführte.
It is hard to imagine how Rottmayr still climbed the scaffolding at the age of 70 and carried out his work at a dizzying height.

Das Video, das Außen- und Innenaufnahmen der Karlskirche zeigt, habe ich mit Musik von Antonio Vivaldi unterlegt. Der venezianische Komponist starb im Juli 1741 in Wien und wurde auf dem bei der Karlskirche liegenden Friedhof "Spittaler Gottesacker" begraben. Auf diesem Areal befindet sich heute die Technische Universität.
The video, which shows exterior and interior shots of the Karlskirche, I underlayed with music by Antonio Vivaldi. The Venetian composer died in July 1741 in Vienna and was buried in the cemetery "Spittaler Gottesacker" near the St. Charles' Church. Today the Technical University is located on this site.
Die Grabstätte ist nicht mehr erhalten, nur eine einfache Steintafel erinnert noch an den Musiker.
The tomb is no longer preserved, only a simple stone tablet still reminds of the musician.
