Where the Gods live The Longshan Temple is located in Wanhua, the oldest settlement in Taipei. In its 280-year history it was heavily destroyed by catastrophes such as a massive earthquake, typhoons or the bombardment in the Second World War and everytime it was rebuilt again.

The temple is famous for its incredibly detailed wood carvings, stonemasonry and bronze works.

Also the inscriptions on the walls and columns are worth seeing because of the calligraphic design.

According to tradition, one enters the temple through the right side entrance (dragon) and leaves it through the left exit (tiger). The three halls are separated by courtyards. In the first courtyard there is the bell tower on one side and the drum tower on the other. The bells are rung in the morning and the drums are struck in the evening to remind the faithful to recite the sutras and perform the ceremonies.
Der Überlieferung nach betritt man den Tempel durch den rechten Nebeneingang (Drache) und verlässt ihn durch den linken Ausgang (Tiger). Die drei Hallen werden durch Höfe voneinander getrennt. Im ersten Hof gibt es auf der einen Seite den Glockenturm und auf der anderen Seite den Trommelturm. Die Glocken werden am Morgen geläutet und die Trommeln am Abend geschlagen, um die Gläubigen an das Rezitieren der Sutras und die Durchführung der Zeremonien zu erinnern.
The temple enshrines Gods from the three Doctrins: Buddism, Daoism and Confucianism. Originally the temple was dedicated to Guanyin, the goddess of mercyfulness.
Im Tempel werden Götter aus dem Buddhismus, dem Taoismus und dem Konfuzianismus verehrt. Ursprünglich war der Tempel Guanyin, der Göttin der Barmherzigkeit, gewidmet.
Today, about more than hundred different deities are enshrined in the temple. In almost every situation in life a deity can be called upon for help. Before an examination, a prayer to Wenchang Wan, the god of culture and literature, is recommended. The goddess Zhu Sheng Niang Niang is responsible for child blessings. It is quite funny, that there is also a god of war, who is at the same time the patron saint of the police and the gangsters.
Heute werden hier über hundert verschiedenen Gottheiten verehrt. In nahezu jeder Lebenslage kann eine Gottheit um Beistand angerufen werden. Vor einer Prüfung empfiehlt sich ein Gebet zu Wenchang Wan, dem Gott der Kultur und Literatur, für Kindersegen ist die Göttin Zhu Sheng Niang Niang zuständig. Originellerweise gibt es auch einen Kriegsgott, der gleichzeitig als Schutzpatron der Polizei und der Gangster fungiert.
The incense sticks lit by the believers are to attract the attention of the gods to answer their prayers. On the altar flowers, fruits, vegetables, sweets or drinks are offered to the gods.
Die Räucherstäbchen, die von den Gläubigen entzündet werden, sollen die Aufmerksamkeit der Götter erregen, damit die Gebete erhört werden. Auf dem Altar werden den Gottheiten Blumen, Früchte, Gemüse, Süßigkeiten oder Getränke dargebracht.
The gods can also be asked for advice on important decisions. For this, two red, crescent-shaped wood pieces, flat on one side and arched on the other, are thrown into the air. A flat side pointing upwards and a curved side pointing upwards is considered a "yes" to the question asked.
Die Götter können bei wichtigen Entscheidungen auch um Rat gebeten werden. Dafür wirft man zwei rote, halbmondförmige Hölzer, die auf der einen Seite flach und auf der anderen gewölbt sind, in die Luft. Eine nach oben zeigende flache und eine nach oben zeigende gewölbte Seite gilt als ein "Ja" auf die gestellte Frage.
The back hall was built by Taiwanese merchants at the end of the 18th century. Here the Taoist deity Mazu has its altar. The two stone columns are unusual, because mainly human figures are engraved.
Die hintere Halle wurde von taiwanesischen Händlern Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts errichtet. Hier hat die taoistische Gottheit Masu ihren Altar. Die beiden Steinsäulen sind ungewöhnlich, da vor allem menschliche Figuren eingemeißelt sind.
