Believe it or not, it's VEGAN!

September 2019 · 5 min read · Nakhon Pathom

I so love meat (Beef, I mean) but I wouldn't mind vegan once in a while. It feels light and good !

It's Vegan Fest!

The Thai Vegetarian Festival or Thailand Vegan Festival เทศกาลกินเจ, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, is a nine-day celebration that occurs on the eve of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar

In Thailand, 10 days connecting September and October, it's Vegan Fest เทศกาลกินเจ! It could also be Vegetarian Fest depending what you prefer. For me, I go extreme vegan. Wait, I thought what you had this evening was Yakult..? That's the only exception so.. It's not just only in some certain city but literally the whole entire country. A lot of shop turns vegan. A lot of people also go vegan. It's actually one of my favourite time of the year!

** Yakult is a sweetened probiotic milk beverage fermented with the bacteria strain Lactobacillus paracasei Shirota

I found vegan food at places could be pretty bland but..

My family run a small food shop, Khao Gang Whale (ร้านข้าวแกงหน้าเวล) in a province in Thailand called, Nakhon Pathom. During the fest, we serve vegan! If I have a chance, I always make my way home during the period as really, it's my favourite time of the year to try all the vegan food my aunt homemade them. She's such a dang good cook!

Vegan food during Vegan Fest in Thailand

I don't know why but I have the feeling, Thai vegan is nothing like any others. It's so flavourful and such wide and various type of food. Konjac and soy are used a lot for all the things and dishes. I love konjac! It's tender and it's chewy, if you know what I mean. It's flavourful and could be really spicy but still, I still feel pretty healthy eating a bunch of them. Today is just the first day of the fest so I stuffed myself with tons of tons of delicious vegan meals. I just can't get enough of it and luckily, 9 more days to go!

Here are some of the menu items today at Khao Gang Whale..
Wait! I just see the word whale, is my family a hidden big investor I don't even know about?? #joke #lol

Deep fried fish cake, sausage, or even salted fish!

'Whattttt?' You're probably like that but hey, yes, yes, yes,..

Thailand is like that. We just can't veggies in form of veggies all day every day for the entire 10 days!

A lot of the veggies and beans especially, soy, are turned into meat forms. I love the deep fried tofu. As simple as it be but I love the salted fish a lot more. It has a unique flavour and texture. You almost think it's a fish and then you feel like, hmm 'I think it's something else'.. in a really good way!

Vegan stir fry

If you haven't really had Thai vegan food, then this might surprise you a bit. They're literally as colourful as other dishes on earth. They taste super duper and oh, how come the texture is like meat and even the taste!

Stir fry minced pork with basil ผัดกะเพราหมูสับ, ginger with wood ear (what a name - -) ผัดขิง, bamboo shoots with tofu ผัดเผ็ดหน่อไม้, pumpkin ผัดฟักทอง, bamboo shoots with imitation duck and lime leaves ผัดเผ็ดเป็ด.. This last one was my most favourite for the day. Too good to be true!

Stir fry Yellow noodle

This one actually reminds me of the Japanese dish called 'Yaki Soba'. Actually, this might be it. Looks almost like egg noodle but it's not. It's vegan youuy! Salty and sweet. A bit oily, to be honest but hey, this was probably the fastest selling of all the items. One customer was even like, '14 boxes of these please' and I'm like, O[]o

The only vegan snack of the day

Doesn't 'vegan snack' sound interesting to you? What would you imagine when people kinda say that.. Here, one of the most famous vegan ingredients for all the vegan food including this period of Vegan fest : Soy balls !! I make the name up. People use them in stiry fry, soup and a lot more.

One awesome way to cook them is to deep fry, stir around in this sweet and spicy sauce. Crispily delicious. Feel hungry or bored during the day, you just snack on it bit by bit.

Still pretty excited about the Vegan Fest this year in general. Oh! Also, the fact that I started selling my THIRSTEA and get such great feedback also make me feel like, I want the vegan fest stay still like this for a long while!

I so recommend Khao Gang Whale (ร้านข้าวแกงหน้าเวล) both for the normal food and vegan food during the vegan fest. Enjoy it to the most delicious moment exists!
