Loving the sound of the sea

Loving the sound of the sea

February 2019 · 4 min read

Imagine sleeping and hearing the sound of the wave all night long.. Sounds lovely, doesn't it? Well, you won't sleep that well as seems like, the fishermen never stop working but hey! It's a beautiful experience at Koh Phitak (เกาะพิทักษ์), Chumphon, Thailand that I would never for get.

Imagine waking up with the sound of the boat engine along with the roosters crowing as an alarm in the morning.. I mean, really early morning.. that you can also get it on Koh Phitak (เกาะพิทักษ์).

Koh Phitak (เกาะพิทักษ์), Chumphon, Thailand

I have actually wrote about the island once in a separate post but just to show you what it's like in general. It's a very small island in Chumphon province. Probably the smallest I have been to in my life and to be exact, 1.1392 km2 with around 40ish houses.

Have I mentioned, besides being fisherman for life, most of the houses on the island turning their houses to be homestays. They provide accommodation and meals for tourists and travellers who travelling through Chumphon and would like to come experience the real local vibes for a night or two.

Baan Kiang Lay Homestay (โฮมสเตย์ บ้านเคียงเล)

I would like to share with you the experience that we went and stay with a host family on the island and how much I loved it. So many to choose from and the way I chose is to call and ask for prices. At the same time, I listened to how kind they sounded :D Yes, I really did that.

Auntie Lek from Baan Kiang Lay Homestay (โฮมสเตย์ บ้านเคียงเล) sounded so nice and kind on the phone. There we went! Once we arrived at the pier, called them and they would provide a boat to come pick us up.

I was glad choosing Baan Kiang Lay Home stay (โฮมสเตย์ บ้านเคียงเล) as the house looks pretty nice and spacious compared to a lot of houses around. I also love the fact that they have the big area with benches to chill. Free coffee, tea and Ovaltine all day. Oh! No wifi!

Almost the entire house built with wood and some parts with concrete. It's quite challenging for this generation to walk around in the house with phones on hands all the time. Some parts of the house are not that safe for the lifestyle!

Also, it's probably the best sleeping condition you would ever come across. Not just how loud from all the nature and engine but the fact that you would be sleeping on the wooden floor with a thin mattress. So many mosquitos at night but thanks the ocean god, the mosquito net provided!

There are stairs just right at the front and we could get off the boat there. Yes, it's right on the sea and all the houses are mostly like that. Lovely! On the island, not much we could think of doing but chilling at the house (sometimes, with doggies), walking around observing things and maybe sneak a peak how they make homemade shrimp paste..

The day went by pretty fast. We were hanging out there and see the colours of sky changing from sky blue to lovely pink and ended at the mysterious dark blue. All the boats passed by every so often and once it got dark, the mosquitos tend to come out and say hi!

I totally fell in love with the ocean <3

If you ever have a chance to go visit Southern Thailand, Chumphon is for sure a lovely place to go visit. Koh Phitak itself is lovely and unique. Baan Kiang Lay Homestay (โฮมสเตย์ บ้านเคียงเล) is also a good choice if you feel like spending a night like a local!

I would totally be back again when it's a squid season (March-October) when we could go out squidding and eat them all raw just right on a boat.. I can't wait!!!!!

Baan Kiang Lay Homestay prices

Most of the houses charge you pretty much the same price as you know, I think they live like families-friends there. They got just 40 houses on that island!
1 night stay with 2 meals - 600THB ($20)
1 night stay with 3 meals - 800THB ($27)
