Taking Mr. Pinmapple on a trip in a peaceful Valparaíso, Chile 🇨🇱

March 2020 · 6 min read · Valparaiso Region

Valparaíso is not supposed to be so peaceful and quiet like this... It's unfortunate and unfortunate at the same time. Mr. Pinmapple loves it nice and quiet as it is right now and so do I. Though, Valparaíso, Chile is usually lively, full of arts, people and a lot of cafes, restaurants and a lot of places to chill like parks, beaches.

Seems like it's a nice and sunny day today so why not going on a walk and check things out a bit?

Dang it Covid-19!

Valparaíso, Chile is a bit quiet just like any other place in the world right now. It's coronavirus outbreak and people are supposed to be home and isolate themselves. That's why it's dang peaceful here... No shop open, no cafe to work in, no street food no nothing. You dang virus, get outta here! Mr. Pinmapple is getting bored and he needs to do something before he's going crazy just like other people are.

I took Mr. Pinmapple out of a hostel for the very first time in these past few days. He seems happy to be out and about! How couldn't he be, Valparaíso, Chile is so colorful and so enjoyable to walk around even when there's nothing open and not many people are around. The ocean as a background and all the beautiful houses up on the hills... He's sure loving it and I'm happy he is!

Wait, can you see him? It's hot out so he escaped into a little dog house on the side of the street for a bit and randomly kicked the actual owner out also. #wow. You gotta behave Mr. Pinmapple.

Always.. always believe, always have hope, always travel, always smile, always love, always try, always be positive... Good vibes only, always...

Graffiti and street art in Valparaíso, Chile

Just like me, Mr. Pinmapple was a bit shocked and overwhelmed at first when he visit Chile for the very first time. He was like 'That the hell is this? Isn't it supposed to be neat and clean?' then after walking here and there a little bit and open his heart to what it is Chile has to offer. It's more like a charm of the city. All the colorful wall art and graffiti in literally every corner.

Mr. Pinmapple enjoyed it a ton and ask me to take so many of him with all the creativity around in Valparaíso. We are quite lucky to be staying at a chillax hostel just right in the center close to a few hidden alleys and cafes which of course, all are closed at the moment due to the covid-19 but still, it's so pretty around here! Mr. Pinmapple love it!

There's money for repression but there's no money for education, sadly and truly.

Also, some of the area, instead of just the artwork, it's an outdoor museum like, Museo a Cielo Abierto. Art that teaches you stuff or makes you realize truths and be aware of what's going on. Well, the museum, you know...

How lucky a few empanada shops are open!! in the center of Valparaíso, Chile

Walking toward the center of Valparaíso, Chile... Well, maybe it's not a complete lock-down just yet. A few street stalls are still open including a few empanada shops we have come across.

Wait, does Mr. Pinmapple even know what empanada is?

Empanada is a type of baked or fried turnover consisting of pastry and filling, common in Mediterranean, Latin American, Filipino cultures. The name comes from the Spanish verb empanar, and literally translates as "enbreaded", that is, wrapped or coated in bread.

It's so common here in Chile! and I think they're also well-known for the snack. The most Chilean local favorite is Chilean Pino filling which is the mixture of beef, onion, olives and hard-boiled egg. No, that's not my fav and neither is Mr. Pinmapple's.

Well, he refused everything I offer, actually. He says, he doesn't have a mouth just yet. Maybe next time when we go together to Korean, some plastic surgery could do something about it then we can share meals and try many things at a time... Asian style.

Anyways, an empanada is a delicious snack and affordable. Chile is not that inexpensive of a country so eating something that costs CLP 1000-1800 ($1-2) and it makes me full, I'm impressed.

A small amusement park is randomly right in the city of Valparaíso, Chile.

Playa Caleta Portales in Valparaíso, Chile

Chilean empanada gave us such a great energy so we walked almost an hour from the center where we stayed to Playa Caleta Portales. It's located between Valparaíso, Chile and Viña del Mar, another pretty beach city next to Valparaíso, Chile.

Playa Caleta Portales is a beach with a pier, seafood restaurants, and a few seafood shops. Too bad it seems like they don't allow swimming at all around here. The sea is so blue and clean and it's sunny out!

Close to the beach is also a fisherman wharf with fish market so this is probably a good spot to come get some freshly caught seafood if you keen on getting some.

Funny, Mr. Pinmapple is not really used to the fishy smell I suppose. He complained a bit but seems like he quite enjoyed the company of the things that come with it. All the seagulls hanging out and flying around. It was lovely to see.

Transport in Valparaíso, Chile

There are buses and Metro connecting some small spots in Valparaíso, Chile so that's quite handy. Mr. Pinmapple and I walked all the way from the center to Playa Caleta Portales. It's a long walk and we were sure tired.

We were thinking of taking a metro back from Portales Station to Puerto Station but thinking of covid-19 outbreak... We're supposed to keep a distance from people so we decided just to walk back.

What a well-spent day we had! but we don't end it just that...

Since the restaurant is all closed at the moment, we most of the days just challenge ourselves by cooking almost every meal. I don't think I'm that good of a cook and Mr. Pinmapple can't really judge either since he can't eat just yet. Though, He admitted that the food I cook smelled real good that he almost wanted to book a flight to Korea right away... Only that he can't fly elsewhere, it's not safe during this covid-19 crisis!

Well, well, again, well spent day in Valparaíso, Chile even though it's so quiet and nothing happening much at the moment.
