The chicken balls.. I mean, the Chicken Rice Balls

September 2019 · 4 min read · Malacca City

If you love Asian food.. If you love Singaporean food.. or even Thai food or Chinese food. You probably might have heard of Chicken Rice. Thailand has so many good ones of it. I have been having this dish since I was little as my grandpa loved it so much. Same here, I freakin' love it. Who could resist the chicken and herbal aroma that cooked well together with the jasmine rice. Though, never before, I had tried the rice in form of balls.. Here we had it, the famous chicken rice balls in Malacca, Malaysia.

Singapore is so well-known for its Hainanese Chicken Rice. We went to one that people.. Mostly, tourists say it's the best one in Town, Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice.

If you haven't subscribed to my channel, do so if you'd like. I share interesting food journey every so often <3

Famous chicken rice balls in Malacca

I don't think I had heard of this type of chicken rice until I visited Malacca, one of the food heavens in Malaysia.

Hainanese chicken rice is a dish of poached chicken and seasoned rice, served with chilli sauce and usually comes with cucumber garnishes.

We stayed at the most touristy street in town, Jonker walk, so it's pretty easy to find spots to eat and drink. On the street itself and the walkable area probably has around 9 or so places serve chicken rice balls : Malacca Jonker Street Chicken Rice Ball, Famosa Chicken Rice Ball, Famosa Chicken Rice Ball - Jonker Street, Nasi Ayam Hoe Kee,
Kedai Kopi Chung Wah, etc.

Restoran My Chicken Rice

Since we were already there and we have heard/read/seen so much of it, why not give it a go. We chose the one in the little wall whole = My type of place right on the Jonker walk. The place didn't seem so busy when we walked in. A few staff were welcoming us in and the menu's not that big. Mostly, as you can guess, many types of chicken rice. Roasted, Steamed, normal chicken, house chicken (a little chewier and pricier).

I seriously didn't expect anything much but the rice that were balled up. I wish I could guess the lucky number of the lottery every month this way. It's exactly just the normal chicken rice that has the rice made in a round shape. It's more exciting to eat it like this every once in a while or once in a life time..? Actually, we could go to any of the shop and make the balls ourselves. That would just work the same way :)

Chicken rice balls at My Chicken Rice

We ordered 2 dishes when dining at My Chicken Rice, Jonker Walk, Malacca. I think it's quite alright. Not the best chicken rice I have tried out there but for sure, not bad at all.

NU Tea Bubble tea #bobalife continues

Every where I go, I just love to try out boba tea / bubble tea. Same here when we're at My Chicken Rice. Right next door, there's this shop NU Tea Bubble tea. The extreme heat, all the sweat from the walk and after the chicken rice balls, we probably need some cool drinks. We ordered 2 types : Sour plum aloe vera and lemon tea aloe vera. As refreshing as it sounds!

My final thoughts on Chicken rice balls.. Well, as mentioned, it's just the normal chicken rice that balled up just to make it sound a bit fancy, I believe. If it's your first time in Malacca, go for it maybe. I wouldn't probably re-order as I find the normal ones more enjoyable.

We enjoyed Malacca a lot though! and for sure would love to go back and try a lot more food :)

Would love try making Hainanese Chicken Rice at home? Here's a pack :)
