The Nine Emperor Gods Festival

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration beginning on the eve of 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, nine-emperor-gods-festival-celebrated-with-primarily in Southeast Asian countries such as Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia by the local Chinese communities since 1627 - Wikipedia -

There's also a #deep info of these 9 gods and I actually had no idea or not even heard about it until I heard of it from @happydolphin so big thank to you!! :)

In Thailand, there are 2 big things people do to celebrate this festival. Gin Jeh and Masong.

Oopsy! I know! So yellow, ain't it?

1. Gin Jeh Festival (เทศกาลกินเจ)

It's actually that time of the year, 'Jeh Festival' or 'Vegan Festival'. Some call it 'Vegetarian Festival' but believe me..

'Gin' in Thai means eat
'Jeh' in Thai means vegan

So VEGAN FEST makes much more sense!

The purpose of this 'Gin Jeh Fest' is pretty much to not kill other lives. Only for 10 days but you know, better than nothing! Also to purify your body and spirit.

Not all the veggies are vegan!

Vegan in Thai (Chinese) is a bit different.. There are some exception to eating vegan food in Thailand. It's not like all the vegetables could be vegan.. At least, the following lists are not ones.

  • Garlic (I know! Life sucks without it but come on, it's just 10 days!)
  • All kinds of onions
  • Cilantro
That's all I could think of for now.

How long exactly is this Gin Jeh Festival (เทศกาลกินเจ) ??

I know, it's been said '9 days' but we actually start eating the day before the first day too so you could make sure your tummy is so pure and no meat in it! LOLOL so yes, let's say it's 10!

Some rules that you may find it a bit WEIRD

Because it's not just about avoid killing lives but it's also about purify your body and spirits. There're a few things people (at least, Thai peeps) pay attention to.

  • No killing, No lie, No stealing (Common sense)
  • No alcohol (Understandable)
  • No sex (Now it's getting a bit odd.. LOL)
  • No food with extreme flavors - sweet, spicy, sour, salty and all. (Don't get it..)

Go white goooo!

Other than that, most of the people also wear white clothes during the fest as it's the color that shows the purity.

Go Yellow goooo!

Wow, almost forgot to talk about the color we have been mentioning. Not sure why but all the places sell vegan food, they have all yellow sign so keep an eye!

The first meal of my Vegan life!

It's been a few years that I was always gone during the festival and yay! This year is the year! I'm here in Thailand and I'm so dang excited to be able to join this yummy fest! YES! Vegan food could be super duper yummy in Thailand and I sure recommend you try if you're ever here during the period of the Jeh fest!

Vegan Noodle Soup (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเจ)

My first vegan meal was noodle soup and for sure gonna be a lot more meals of noodle as it's my fav and you can find it at every corner in Thailand :D I'm sure you're gonna be so surprise how the noodle looks as it looks so much like a normal meal with all the (imitation) meat offered.

Kuay Teow Kae (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ)

Normally this type of noodle soup called 'Kuay Teow Kae (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ)' has a lot of meat balls / fish balls and Red Pork (Pork marinated in a sweet red sauce) and squid. In a vegan version, they make it looks pretty much the same as a original version! What do you think?

All the imitation meat use soy beans as the main ingredients..

To be honest, it tastes just as yum as the one with real meat. Though, feel even better as you know you eat some something pretty healthy and clean for both your body and spirit (No, no, no. I'm not faking it! LOLOL). Told you! Thai vegan is so good!

This place I went to called 'ก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะไปรษณีย์กลาง'. A bowl of noodle costs 50 THB or 1.50 USD

2. Masong

Be warned! If you're sensitive for seeing blood, skip this part of the post!

Ma in Thai means horse
Song means invite spirits of god to possess into their bodies

Masong is the Thai Chinese related tradition. In Thailand, Phuket is well known for it. I haven't seen it in Bangkok or Nakhon Pathom where I have been living. I don't think I would go to see if it's happen to be held near my house either.

Why so?

Please keep on reading.. LOL

.. The spirits of the gods use the bodies of these people as a vehicle, as one rides a horse. Only pure, unmarried men or women without families of their own can become masong.

The festivities in Phuket include a procession of masong wearing elaborate costumes who pierce their cheeks and tongues with all manner of things, including swords, banners, machine guns, table lamps, and flowers. ..While the face is the most common area pierced, some also pierce their arms with pins and fishhooks. Teams of people accompany the masong to keep their wounds clean and to help support the heavier piercings. It is believed that while they are possessed the masong will not feel any pain. - Wikipedia -

As I have never been to one my self, here are some pics from google!

Source and oh my! I can't have more than one in my damn post! Go check them more out yourself! Sorry! :D

Well, Vegan one is kinda fun but the last one I'm not too sure (Just my personal opinion though!)
