What to do in Velika Planina, Slovenia?

April 2021 · 3 min read · Slovenia

If you decide to visit Slovenia, you really must see Velika Planina. It looks like a scene from the classic movie The sound of music. Well, it’s just that you can’t find singing Austrians and some Nazis running around there. Up there you can’t find any shops, only some nice local cheese, and homemade products that shepherds sell. We also tried some of those free-range ecological products they offered us.

There, you find only three types of people – a shepherd community, local sellers in the main cottage, and tourists. We found our peace up there. It’s a perfect place for recharging your batteries, enjoy calmness, and breathe the clean mountain air. But don’t worry, you won’t be totally off the grid. The cabin has electricity and even WiFi can be found up there.

To get there you first need to get to parking near Kamniška Bistrica (the map is here). When you get there, you can choose two options. Hiking or Cable Car. WNFdiary chose hiking, of course, but be prepared. It’s a three-hour hike. If you aren’t into this, rather take a sweet ride from the valley. Oh, in any case, don’t forget to wear some proper footwear. After all, you’ll be walking at a high altitude. There are no shops where you could buy a second pair of shoes or a jacket.

The shepherd told us that once a tourist had come up here wearing high heels. She had broken off one of her heels and had been looking for a shoemaker. Of course, there was none! In the end, a shepherd nailed it back for her and that accident was real entertainment for the week. It wasn’t the most comfortable walk back to the cable car, but I hope she learned her lesson.

Anyway, on the top of Velika Planina, you can rent a lodge and enjoy your peaceful vacation right away. So, if you are a nature lover and peace seeker this place is a must for you. Here you can choose different tracking every day, paths are good marked and there are low chances to get lost. Because of peace, you can meditate and find your inner peace at any time of the day. In the summer the sun is perfect for sunbathing and collecting some vitamin D, while in the winter you can enjoy some snow fun moments.

Meditating in the middle of pristine nature? Yes, please!

Just be careful, there can be a lot of snow, so check some weather info, before you go. An of course, if you are a photographer like myself you are in heaven here. I am just sad because at night we didn't have clear nights, so my constellation photography wasn't an option. Anyway, come and check your self how beautiful can be here.
