They Weren't Kidding! That Really Does Smell Like Vomit!

January 2022 · 2 min read · Surat Thani Province

You've had this stuff? It's like all the rage from Burma all the way to Tokyo! I'm talking about that stinky cheese fruit, the "king" of fruit, durian. As an American I certainly did not grow up with this, so maybe that has something to do with it. For us westerners it's a weird weird thing. Smells like stinky cheese or day old vomit not really sure which, it's pungent too, like it gets stuck up your nostrils. I ate some of it once, I'll try just about anything but insects. Oh my what strong unusual flavor is has. Can't compare it to anything at all. So you'll just have to try it yourself. But it's got a super weird strong flavor and mushy like what you might find in a baby's diaper. Then I was burping up the weird taste of it for the next hour. Yeah, I think I'll pass on Durian next time. Just not for me. And you can find plenty of it here when it's in season at the Saturday Night Market in Koh Phangan Thailand. Good thing is they have a lot more than Durian at this market, now come have a look around!
