Wyścigi psich zaprzegów na Alasce mają długą tradycję. Ten jest największy, najdłuższy i najtrudniejszy na świecie. Trasa wyścigu to około 1850 km. Zaczyna się w Anchorage (oficjalny start) i kończy w Nome. (mapka). Trasa jest upamiętnieniem szlaku, którym pedził zaprzęg ratunkowy z surowicą dla dotkniętych epidemią mieszkańców Nome w 1925 r.

Zdjęcia są z linii startu z Anchorage. Oficjalnego startu, bo to raczej impreza rodzinna gdzie można zrobić sobie zdjęcie z psiakiem i dostać autograf Mushera. Prawdziwy start zaczyna się około 100km dalej gdzie kończy się cywilizacja.

Każdy maszer ma inną strategię, jedni pracują w dzień inni w nocy, każdy ma inny plan treningowy przygotowujący siebie oraz psy do tego wyścigu. Każdy z nich ma specjalne menu dla psów, różne mieszanki karm i przekąsek. To wszystko oraz opieka nad psami, ich wytrzymałość ma ogromne znaczenie składające się na wynik końcowy.

Ciekawe mieli też sposoby transportu

Zasady wyścigu są obligatoryjne dla wszystkich, każdy maszer musi posiadać pewne elementy wyposażenia, takie jak specjalne kurtki, ciężkie śpiwory, siekiery, rakiety śnieżne, żywność dla maszera i karma dla psów, buty dla każdego psa (4 sztuki dla 1 psa) w celu ochrony przed pocięciem łap przez lód i twardy śnieg.

Niektórzy spędzają cały rok na przygotowaniach do tego wyścigu, planują zapotrzebowanie pożywienia jakie będzie im oraz psom potrzebne na dwutygodniowy pobyt na szlaku, trenują wytrzymałość psów oraz ich zgranie.

Some spend the whole year preparing for this race, planning the food demand for them and dogs needed for a two-week stay on the trail, training the dogs.

W latach 70. XX w., gdy zaczęto go organizować, pokonanie trasy 1850 km zajmowało najlepszym maszerom -20dni (mężczyźni są klasyfikowani razem z kobietami). Dziś ten czas skrócił się o połowę. Najlepsi osiągają wynik 8-9 dni.

Tak jak wspominałem te psy mają szaleńswto w oczach. One naprawdę chcą biegać. Tak bardzo chcą biegać, że gdy by nie maszer to zabiegały by się na śmierć. Jak bardzo mordercze są to wyścigi świadczą już same zasady. Startują zaprzęgi składające się z 12-16 psów a na mecie wystarczy mieć ich 6.
