Hiking for mushrooms with my friends

Hiking for mushrooms with my friends

November 2019 · 3 min read · Lviv Oblast

One time, a longtime friend called me and asked if I was going for mushrooms because he doesn't go to the woods too often to look for forest gifts, so he wanted to join someone more experienced. Unfortunately, at the time, I was just going on a mountain hike (I wrote about it in this post), so I refused him, but promised to call the next time when my other friends and I would be going to the forest.

It wasn't too long to wait, just a week in the weekend, me and my brother-in-law started gathering participants for a mushroom hike. I called my friend and he said he would bring his wife with him, but in the morning, they wished to get their children, boys 10 and 8, to go to the forest. Our regular team of mushroom seekers, who, in addition to my brother-in-law and me, also include my brother-in-law's brother and his friend, have been joined by their father and uncle's brother-in-law. In total, we gathered 10 people, if count the children, so we went to the forest with three cars!

So, our three cars were forced to drive about 10 km on a dirt road, in places we felt we could not drive because we don't used SUVs but ordinary cars with low suspension. However, we managed to get as close as possible to the forest. We left the car on the lawn, and we walked to the forest. Usually we searched porcini mushroms there, but this time they were not there, we managed to find only a few Clitocybe nebularis. I want to point out that we rarely go for mushrooms in such a large company, because in order for each of us to find at least a bucket of mushrooms, we need to find 10 buckets in total! I will run a little ahead of time, on that day, on average, each participant of the hike found about half a bucket of mushrooms, which is a good result for so many people. It should also be borne in mind that this year's mushroom season is not too good, at least in our region. But we were not too upset because the places we visited turned out to be very beautiful and our hike was successful.

Let's actually go back to the place where I jumped a bit. Finding some mushrooms, we decided to go elsewhere and left the forest in a huge meadow, more like a huge field. In the middle of the clearing grew a single birch tree, near which we once found many Leccinum scabrum. And what was our surprise when we found a whole bunch of mushrooms again (Leccinum scabrum), albeit somewhat old. We were a little late at this point, and I took a lot of good photos, because the really beautiful scenery stretched around.

After we moved on, we again entered the forest where the golden colors of autumn prevailed. There was less space, but also very beautiful. I'll tell you what we found there next time.
